Blonde-haired, blue-eyed Yarna Yr Jonsdottir is well-known throughout the Nordic region, where she was crowned Miss Iceland in 2015 and Miss Euro in 2016. Also a track and field star, she won the Icelandic women’s championship in 2014 and was chosen as a brand representative for Nike. Monday night, Yarna Yr was crowned Miss Universe Iceland.

This weekend, she is at Oliverio’s Bridal and Prom Boutique where owner Angela Patsy is dressing her to compete in the Miss Universe Pageant to be held Thanksgiving weekend at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas. Patsy is working with Miami-based designer Fernando Wong to create a custom gown for the newly-crowned Miss Universe Iceland.

“I’m thinking champagne and golds, but won’t be sure until she tries some dresses on,” said Patsy just prior to Friday morning’s first fitting at the dress shop.

This isn’t Patsy’s first involvement with dressing Iclandic royalty. Last year, she and Wong worked together to outfit 2016 Miss Universe Iceland Hildur Maria Leifsdottir in an ice blue gown with very fitted silhouette and flowy chiffon train.

“She loved blue and she loved bling,” Patsy said. “When we think of Iceland, we think of the Blue Lagoon so my idea was a milky sky blue – the color of Blue Lagoon water. That my vision for her and she loved it.”

Hildur Maria did not make the top 15 in the 2016 Miss Universe Pageant, but she was voted by fashion reviewers as wearing one of the pageant's top 10 evening gowns.

Patsy loves her connection with Iceland and Miss Universe Iceland Pageant Director Jorge Esteban, which started about four years ago when Patsy attended the Miss USA Pageant.

“Jorge was the interview coach and we talked about him coming to (Oliverio’s) and working with some of my contestants to help them with interview skills,” Patsy said. “That October, he came for the first time and he did a free seminar here and worked individually with each of the girls who came for the private lessons.”

Last year, Esteban acquired the directorship of the Miss Universe Iceland Pageant and thereafter asked Patsy to dress the winner of the 2016 pageant for the next step of her competition – the Miss Universe Pageant.

“He told me I was his first choice out of all the different stores he works with here in the U.S.,” said Patsy, explaining that no similar dress boutiques exist in Iceland.

Patsy and her mother Milda Oliverio attended the 2016 Miss Universe Iceland Pageant during which Hildur Maria Leifsdottir was crowned.

“It was the first Miss Iceland Pageant in several years,” Patsy said. “They were basically bringing it back. My mom and I flew to Iceland and actually helped with the pageant. My mom was a chaperone for the contestants and I helped the judges, working with the auditor.”

Following both the 2016 and 2017 pageants, Patsy brought the newly-crowned winners back home with her. Accompanying Patsy to Iceland this year were her daughter Samantha Patsy and store employee, Cody-Kristofer Layton.

Patsy said she loves working with both Jorge Esteban and Fernando Wong – a designer who can create any vision and who designs opening number dresses for Miss Universe Iceland contestants.

Though the official language of Iceland is Icelandic – an Indo-European dialect belonging to the sub-group of North Germanic languages – many residents speak good English.

“Some Miss Universe Iceland contestants cannot speak English very well and have translators on stage, but Yarna Yr – this year’s winner – speaks good English,” Patsy said.

As is custom in Iceland, last names are not family names. They are patronymic – indicating a person’s father. For example, Hildur Maria Leifsdottir is Leif’s daughter and Yarna Yr Jonsdottir is Jon’s daughter. A person is referred to by their given name such as Hildur Maria or Yarna Yr.

After a makeup session with Samantha Patsy this morning, Yarna Yr is available for meeting and greeting the public at Oliverio’s Bridal and Prom Boutique at Eastpointe. Between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., visitors are welcome to meet and take photos with the Miss Universe contestant. She will be leaving Sunday morning, flying out of North Central West Virginia Airport.
