In the early 2000s, Halle Berry set a precedent and made Miss World history when she became the first former beauty queen to win an Oscar. Since 1995, Berry, who won the Miss USA World in 1986, has had a strong impact on beauty candidates as well as black performers on both sides of the Atlantic. Berry is not only one of the great actresses of the 21st century, but will be remembered alongside Aretha Rocke (delegate from Trinidad & Tobago 1982) and Jennifer Hosten (Miss World 1970) as one of the most beautiful black representatives in the history of Miss World. as well as Kayonga "Benita" Mureka (Zaires candidate 1985) and Veronique Caloc (Miss France 1998). In 1998 the Miss USA Organization Halle Berry presented the "Distinguished Achievement Award"; It is awarded to a former beauty queen who excels in performance and influence in America.

Miss United States of America

Halle Berry first attracted attention in early 1986 when she reached the finals of Miss USA Universe – one of the world's best beauty pageants – in Miami, Florida. But before she could do that this year, she'd won two beauty pageant awards: Miss Teen All American Pageant 1985 and then Miss Ohio USA. In Miami, the former host of the Miss Universe Pageant, young Berry, who acted as her own manager, came second ahead of 49 of America's most beautiful and talented candidates. Each delegate was judged in three categories: swimsuit, evening dress and interview. The judges included Rene Enriquez (Nicaraguan-born actor), Michael Young (actor), Kimberly Tomes (Miss Texas and Miss USA Universe 1977), Dave Robinson (singer), Waymon Tisdale (former basketball player) and Mai Shanley (Miss New Mexico) and Miss USA 1984), John Callahan (Actor), Maria Remenyi (Miss California and Miss USA 1966), Christopher Hewett (Actor), Miriam Stevenson (Miss South Carolina & Miss Universe 1954), Carol Connors (Singer) and John Bolger ( Actor).

Because of her outstanding performance, Berry joined Miss World in England in 1986. She was appointed a delegate to the United States to replace Brenda Denton, Miss New Mexico and Miss USA World, which ranked third in Britain in late 1985. Berry's appearance at the 35th Miss United States doesn't surprise people who followed the Americans; a result that seemed almost impossible a few decades earlier. In the 1970s and early 1980s, three beauty pageants had black queens, but the Miss USA Organization didn't make it until 1990 when the stately Carole Gist, 1.82m, won the national cup.

Sixteen years before Miss USA 1986 Jennifer Hosten, born in Grenada – an English-speaking island in the Caribbean – was the first black participant to be crowned Miss World. But she wasn't the only one. In the late 1970s, Gina Ann Casandra Swaisson from Bermuda, another "Caribbean Queen", won the World Prize in Great Britain. Two years ago, on July 26, 1977, Janelle Commissiong, Miss Trinidad Tobago – "the black bomb" according to the New York Times – had become the first black winner in Miss Universe's 26-year history. Then, in 1984, Vanessa Williams became the first black Miss America in Atlantic City, but her reign ended prematurely and was replaced by Suzette Charles, another black beauty.

Halle Berry in Miss World 1986!

The closing ceremony on November 13, 1986 took place in the Royal Albert Hall in London in front of 8,000 spectators. Approximately 77 countries and dependencies took part in this competition, including The Gambia, Tonga and Isle of Man. In November 1986, Berry broke precedents by taking part in the global competition in which she was among the first sixth. It was the first time in Miss World history that America sent a black participant to London, home of the Miss World Organization.

There were some interesting anecdotes: Ms. Bolivia, Claudia Arevalo Ayala, was a member of one of the most important Bolivian volleyball clubs; Miss Ecuador was an English teacher and model in her home country. and Gibraltar, a tiny British dependency in Europe, became the smallest territory in the world to send a representative to London. Oddly enough, Maria Juarist Mateo Begoña, Miss Venezuela, had the most expensive evening dress of the event. Worth no less than $ 16,000! On the other hand, Poland sent a delegate to global competition – in a country where the beauty contests were traditionally banned by the communist regimes. Sri Lanka, a nation that has been in crisis for years, has also taken part. There were 17 black entries from Africa, Europe and America. It was the first time that France sent a black delegate to the Miss World Pageant.

However, the British pageant should not be left without mentioning Halle Berry. She was also the first black woman from an industrialized nation to reach the semi-finals at Miss World Pageant. Ohio & # 39; s Berry was the 36th American delegate to take part in Miss World, a competition in which the United States did not perform well. In 1972 Lynda Carter – a famous entertainer in the late 70s and early 80s – was a semi-finalist. On November 23, 1973, Miss USA, Marjorie Wallace, Miss Philippines, defeated Evangeline Pascual, and became Miss World. The states had suffered a severe setback in the mid-1970s when Annelise Ilschenko and Kimberly Marre Foley did not make it to the semi-finals. Then, in the years that followed, America could not win the title.

Since the start of the global event, Halle Berry has been recognized as one of the leading international titles Great Britain, Roberta, along with Linda Marie McManus from New Zealand, Giselle Jeanne-Marie Laronde from Trinidad and Tobago, Maria Juarist Begoña from Venezuela and Alison Louise Slack from New Zealand Pereira from Brazil and Margot Montt from Chile.

Two and a half weeks before the global competition, Berry and another 76 participants did a floating photo shoot in Macau, a former Portuguese colony in Asia. When she arrived in Macau, she was greeted by a crowd of about 200 cheers, who greeted her with the traditional blessing: "Ni hao" (Hello in Chinese).

In the first round, Miss USA World came third in 1986 after Venezuelan Maria Juarist Mateo Begoña and New Zealander Linda Marie McManus. Berry received 42 points for 46 Miss Venezuela and 44 for Miss New Zealand. The South American delegate, Berry's main competitor, had been well prepared for over a year by Osmel Sousa, the world's most successful director of beauty pageants in the second half of the 20th century.

In the second round, Halle Berry had 27 points in the swimsuit competition.
