Martha Hines, 81, was crowned Miss South Carolina in 1955.

Sixty-two years later, she will be treated once again like royalty in the Spartanburg Christmas Parade, riding in a classic car, and wearing a tiara.

Eden Terrace of Spartanburg participates in a program called Second Wind Dreams. The program, dedicated to the fulfillment of dreams and recreating special moments in the lives of seniors, has arranged for Hines’s special debut in the parade which will take place at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Hines has been a resident of Eden Terrace since November 2017.

Originally from Conway, Hines’s first pageant was the Cotton Festival Pageant. At the age of 17, her motivation for participating was the hope of winning scholarships as a way to pay for college. When asked about why she began competing in pageants, Hines responded, “It helped me because I had a chance to do different things and, if I won the money, it would help my mother and daddy get me through college.”

Hines’s success in the pageant world helped her achieve her academic goals, as she graduated from Coker College in 1958. She well surpassed her humble academic goal to use the money she earned to pay for college. Her Miss South Carolina competition wins included the titles of Miss Conway, Miss Southern 500, Miss Fairmount Farmer’s Festival Queen, Miss Dixie, Melon Queen and Miss Coastal Empire. A woman of many achievements, Hines played the piano as her talent.

“If it was a beauty pageant, I was in it,” Hines said.

While Hines is unable to remember a great deal of the details regarding her pageant-filled past, she easily verbalized her favorite part of participating and winning Miss South Carolina. “Getting to meet all those people from all over the country,” she said. “I even kept in touch with my roommate. She went on to win Miss America the next year.”

The roommate to which Hines was referring to was Miss America 1956, Marian McKnight. Hines remembers a special moment involving her dear friend. “After my roommate won Miss America, they asked her who her best friend was. She said my name and I couldn’t believe it!”

Though the crown Hines received from participating in Miss America was misplaced, she held her Miss SC crown proudly during a recent visit, smiling and saying of the pageant, “That was a long time ago.”

Executive Director of Eden Terrance, Cindy B. Hughes, is proud of their partnership with Second Wind Dreams. “We have so many special residents who have so many fantastic stories. We try to choose a resident that has an interesting story to offer and try to make a dream of theirs come true again. It’s all about living. The residents in our community don’t just sit around in rocking chairs. Sometimes, revisiting some of their memories is the best way of getting our residents involved in the community again.”

Hines’s story has definitely left its mark on the Spartanburg community, as the Miss Spartanburg Organization has already contacted Eden Terrace about the potential of Hines being the one to crown the next Miss Spartanburg.

Hughes says of Hines, “She’s just a special lady. She was beautiful and she still is. And though she says she doesn’t like the attention, I think that secretly it has really brought back a special time in her life.”
