Renelle Roberts, a former producer and reporter for CBN now works as a professional voiceover actress and narrator from her home recording studio in Chesapeake.

Renelle Roberts is used to being the one asking the questions and learning about others.

So, it was a bit odd for the 35 year old former reporter turned full time professional voice-over actress and narrator to be on the opposite side sharing her story.

The sole proprietor of her business, Roberts is Los Angeles trained and has done everything from national commercials to audio books to training and e-learning videos for local businesses.

A Connecticut native, Roberts represented her state in 2000 in the Miss America pageant.

She received her bachelor’s degree in media studies from Southern Connecticut State University in 2002 and her master’s in broadcast journalism from Regent University in 2004. For almost a decade, Roberts worked as a television features producer and reporter for CBN through its affiliate Freeform, formerly the ABC Family channel.

Her husband Casey is a principal at Smithfield High School. Roberts decided she would stay home to raise their daughter, Daphney, who is 5.

From her in-home studio in Chesapeake, Roberts can work with people all over the world.

"I have the capability to communicate with them and record for them and get projects back to them very quickly. So it’s been a blessing. It’s been a dream come true really," Roberts said.

CHILDHOOD DREAMS COME TRUE

“I wanted to be an entertainment reporter actually when I was a little girl. I always wanted to be in television. We didn’t have cable growing up, we only had channel 8 (ABC) at our house. So my celebrities were my local news reporters and national news reporters. That’s just all I saw because that’s all we had. So, I would write fan letters to them and that’s what I wanted to be.

“I also had another dream of being Miss America, which I think a lot of little girls back then dreamt of. I did actually get to partially accomplish that. I was a junior in college at 18 when I won the Miss Connecticut title and got to compete in Miss America … it was so much fun and that also opened me up to a wider spectrum of journalism because when you’re Miss Connecticut for a year, you’re doing lots of appearances and you’re with reporters a lot. That kind of just showed me even more of what print and broadcast journalism are about and that helped fuel my love for reporting.”

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

“I am a member of the (Hampton Roads) Chamber of Commerce. I love going to chamber events. I’m also a member of the Virginia Production Alliance. There are wonderful gatherings where we get to meet people in the industry. And so those are wonderful groups that I highly endorse. The chamber has been wonderful for learning about the local businesses and the Virginia Production Alliance is great because it gets me to meet people not just in Hampton roads, but people all over Virginia involved in film and television production. And so that’s been really really helpful.”

SPARE TIME

“We love to go for walks. My daughter is really into violin, so as a family we like to go to the Virginia Symphony orchestra performances, especially their kids’ performances. We love musical theater, so we like supporting the Hurrah Players, anything that comes to the Chrysler. … Every summer, we do take a family vacation to Martha’s Vineyard with our extended family. That’s one of the highlights of our year…relaxing, playing board games and that kind of thing. Just being out in nature, being together as a family and that brings us a lot of joy.”

HUMANITARIAN WORK

“My husband and I are very passionate about humanitarian work. We’ve gone together to Southern India…we help out at a children’s home and help widows. We’re hoping to take our daughter when she’s a bit older. ... We’ve been involved for the last 10 years in helping out there and supplying school uniforms for the children and shoes for them and supporting a local school there. It’s important to live our own lives, but we also need to remember that there are people who are less fortunate in our country and other countries. And to keep that as something primary in our radar so we don’t just get consumed with ourselves.”

10 YEARS FROM NOW

“I really see myself just continuing down this path. There’s a lot going on in society now — the theme of living your best life — and I honestly feel like I’ve reached that. I know life isn’t perfect, we have our problems like everybody else, but for me, being a wife, being a mom, and being a voice actress is my definition of success. And so if I could be doing the same things, still doing voice overs, still spending time with my family in 10 years, then I would be as happy as a queen.”
