A moment with Miss Nam 2017

WINDHOEK – It is not often that people realise their childhood dreams and often those dreams fall by the wayside of life, but Sune January proved to be one of the few exceptions’ to the rule, when she was crowned Miss Namibia last week.

Talking to The Southern Times, Namibia’s newest beauty queen said the announcement of her winning had a numbing effect on her body, with her mind racing and her body going into a temporary paralysis.
“When Chops (reference to Tshoopara Tshoopara who as the pageant host) announced my name, I couldn’t believe it! To hear the crowd at that moment, my family on their feet, I had to believe it and at that moment, I knew my life was going to change forever and a million thoughts just kept running through my head, but I remember telling myself that I’m going to make my country proud.” she said.

The 23-year-old computer applications graduate, said she was raised by her grandparents in Rehoboth, a town just south of the capital. Interestingly January grew up as a tomboy and said she enjoyed the “crazy adventures” with the boys.

“I played street soccer and rode bikes with the boys, I would climb trees and hills. There was a day I drove my bike downhill and fell on my face, that’s why I have a gold tooth” she said chuckling.

The beauty said she decided to partake in this year’s Miss Namibia specifically because she first wanted to finish her studies, that way she would be a reigning queen with both beauty and brains.
“All the ladies who participated and won had degrees or were either studying, I told my family, I don’t want to be the girl that enters without any experience. So I promised myself that when I get back, I’ll enter! And I was fortunate enough to win,” she added.

January was introduced to the world of beauty pageants during her final year of high school, when she was crowned Miss Dr Lemmer, her high school. But her bigger break came while pursuing her undergraduate studies in computer applications in India. In 2013 she was scouted by the Indian fashion industry and became a freelance professional model.
During her reign as Miss Namibia 2017, the long legged-model is looking at joining government’s fight against rhino poaching and be part of the ‘Saving The Rhino ‘ campaign. She is also looking at starting the ‘one dollar project’ aimed at supplementing the fight against poverty in Namibia.

“After my reign, I have a million dreams that I want to achieve, But I want to work with Syrian refugees, Namibian orphans, the elderly and raise awareness on men also being victims of gender based violence,” she emphasized.

January also made history by becoming the first person from Rehoboth to win the Miss Namibia title. The pageant has been dominated by beauties from Namibia’s capital city Windhoek.

She did not only take the grand prize that evening but also won the Top Model, Athletics and photogenic awards. Romilly Mouton and Tessia Mutwamezi where crowned first and second princess respectively.
The reigning queen will be representing the country at the Miss Universe Pageant, slated to take place in the Philippines in November this year.
