Miss World Philippines 2017 Laura Lehmann is confident about competing at the Miss World International pageant on Nov. 18 at the Sanya City Arena in China.

The Filipino-German model said so in an interview with Bulletin Entertainment, adding that her being a TV personality might prove to be a big advantage.

“Maybe it will help in the sense that I’m very used to getting interviewed and very used to be on TV,” she explained.

Laura believes being Pinay gives her an upper hand, too.

“I think the advantage of the Philippines is that we have so many people supporting us. You know, in some of the other countries, pageantry isn’t as big for them (as it is for us). So, the girl might feel like she’s on her own but here we have a send-off, we have a presscon, everyone is watching and of course that helps a lot.”

The 24-year-old TV host and former courtside reporter noted that she reads some of the comments on her social media, particularly those that uplift her and rally behind her bid for the crown.

Laura is looking at the competition not as her fight but of the Philippines.

“I know I am representing a country that I love so much. I was born and raised here, this is my home so because of that I will really do my best to represent it in the best way I can,” she said.

“I want the world to see how great we are.”

On her own

“I think the biggest challenge is actually the styling and getting ready and putting on makeup and hair because usually when you’re in the Philippines you have your makeup artist and hair stylist with you, it was very easy, kumpleto but I’ll be alone there (in China), I’ll be on my own,” Laura said.

She is not used to doing these things by herself being not that “girly.”

Good thing her morale gets boosted in a big way with the pointers she gets from Megan Young, the first Filipina to win the Miss World title.

“I’m very lucky ’cause Megan and I are actually very close since before pa so she was able to give me a lot of advice,” she revealed. “She tells me it’s important to be myself and do my best and be happy. I think when you’re happy that’s when you do your best kesa ’pag masyado kang stressed, ngarag.”

Laura also asks other Miss World Philippines winners for tips, especially Catriona Gray who bagged the multimedia award last year.

“I asked her about that because she won it. I asked her how she did it,” Laura said.

Confidently beautiful with a heart

Laura is happy to have found the right platform for her.

She said the reason she joined Miss World is for its beauty with a purpose slant.

“It’s important to choose the one that you’re passionate about, and for me it was really Miss World as I like what they do,” she noted.

The beauty queen enjoys reaching out to different people and helping the needy through her charities as “that’s really what I do, that’s the type of person I am.”

The Philippine delegate defended the longest-running beauty pageant from criticisms concerning the choice of winners.

“Miss World has integrity,” she explained. “They will choose the winner that is deserving – whoever that girl is. They’re going to choose a girl who is sincere, who is right for the position, who is there to give back to people. So I think it is not our place to think that this pageant has any negative. I will just do my best.”

Newfound friends

At the time of writing, the psychology graduate was excited to meet the other contestants.

“I’m just so excited to go and meet all the different girls from the different countries and learn about their cultures,” she said. “I think Miss World provides a great venue to get to do that stuff.”

She doesn’t stress herself out thinking who her toughest contender is.

“To be honest I don’t really think of it that way. I’m just there to give it my best, do my best, and be the best person I can be. That’s how I look at it.”

Laura has been updating her followers on social media on how her journey is turning out.

On day one in China, she posted a photo of herself in an embroidered light and dark blue Filipiniana dress designed by Bessie Besana.

She was also seen busy making friends with co-candidates, even teaching them a bit of Filipino. In a short video posted on her Instagram, Miss World participants could be heard saying “Mabuhay.”Beauty with a purpose
