ST. PAULS - Victoria Huggins may represent every city and county and community in the state, but the reigning Miss North Carolina will tell you there is no place quite like this little town just off of Interstate 95.

“No matter how far my career, opportunities, or ambitions have taken me, St. Pauls has been there every step of the way, cheering me on as my hometown,” says Huggins, 23, who earned the crown on June 24 at the 80th Miss North Carolina Scholarship Pageant at the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts in Raleigh. “These are the people who helped shape me into the woman I am today, and I am forever grateful for their unwavering belief in me.”

Huggins is scheduled to compete for the Miss America Scholarship Pageant on Sept. 6-10 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, with the finals set for a 9 p.m. national telecast that will be carried live by WTVD News Channel 11.

“Balancing Miss America preparation in addition to the incredible opportunities I’ve had so far as Miss North Carolina has been a challenge I’ve really enjoyed and embraced,” says the 5-foot-4 brunette, who was the 2013 Miss Fayetteville.” I’ve seen how my message of perseverance resonates with people of all ages in our state, and I can’t wait to share it with the Miss America judges in Atlantic City.”

Before Huggins heads off to center-stage and the runway of Boardwalk Hall, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke cum laude graduate returns home Thursday for a Miss America Pageant sendoff scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Dr. R.E. Hooks Community Center, 111 N. Third Street.

The event is open to the public.

“She is a wonderful representative of our state,” says Susan Williams of Fayetteville, who is Huggins’ business manager and a member of the Miss North Carolina Scholarship Pageant board of directors.

A singer since early childhood, where she has performed from the Alabama Theatre in Myrtle Beach to the Apollo Theatre in Harlem and as an “American Idol” preliminary contestant, Huggins plans to sing her own rendition of “I Will Always Love You,” by Dolly Parton in the talent competition of the Miss America pageant in memory of her maternal grandmother, Betty Sue Mahoney, who died on April 8 at age 72.

“Granny Betty Sue and I would sing this song together at her house when I was a little girl,” Huggins says. “I hope I’ll make her proud.”

Song is a part of Huggins’ Alz Project: Alzheimer’s Awareness platform.

“My passion for music therapy to be incorporated in Alzheimer’s care facilities was born through my visits to nursing homes as a child,” the state queen says, “and personally witnessing how music can bring memories to the forefront of the brain in a way that isn’t medicinally possible.”

Now, the former “Carolina in the Morning” producer and reporter for WECT-TV in Wilmington, is bidding for the crown so many young women dream of - Miss America.

“I can think of no higher honor than bringing the Miss North Carolina crown home to St. Pauls,” Huggins, the Miss Greater Sampson County titleholder, says “and hopefully the Miss America crown.”
