Congratulations to Busisiwe Mmotla who was crowned Miss Soweto 2017!
The city of Soweto hosted the 38th annual Miss Soweto pageant finals at the Soweto Theatre recently. The Miss Soweto pageant was created to bring awareness of problems affecting the women of Soweto and bring about change to the community. This year’s event was hosted by veteran actor Vusi Kunene, with a performance by international house vocalist Monique Bingham.
The previous crown holders have continued on to become household names such as Basetsana Kumalo, who went on to become Miss SA and is now a popular television producer and businesswoman, former SABC newsreader Augustine Masilela and TV and radio personality Lerato Kganyago. Nthabiseng Priscilla Kgasi, who won in 2016, has been fully involved with the Soweto community, assisting in charity projects and the Tirisano Glen Foundation among other things.
Twenty-four-year-old Busisiwe Mmotla from Emndeni was crowned Miss Soweto 2017 out of 20 finalists, with Musawenkosi Gumede from Naledi the first princess and Phumzile Nyembe from Diepkloof, the second princess.
Mmotla, who is not only a pageant queen but is also a qualified teacher, walked away with a prize money of R50 000. When asked about her plans for her reign, Miss Soweto said she plans on starting a programme to develop literacy skills for the youth of Soweto and to start a bursary foundation for learners in Soweto.
Speaking at the pageant, sponsor White Star Marketing Manager, Mokhele Makhothi congratulated Busisiwe Mmotla said, “We would like to say a huge congratulation and welcome the newest Miss Soweto to the White Star family. Mmotla embodies the ethos of our brand; she is a beautiful and intelligent young woman, who will surely be a positive role model in her community. We look forward to a fruitful partnership during her reign as Miss Soweto 2017.”
With the faith shown by the Soweto community in winner Busisiwe Mmotla, it promises to be a fulfilling year ahead, not only for her but the community at large.
