The National Council for Indian Culture (NCIC) has urged Chandini Chanka, Miss World T&T, to get more involved in charity work and spend time inspiring young people especially in rural communities. The call came from Surudeo Mangaroo, the Public Relations Officer of the NCIC last Thursday night when the NCIC hosted Chanka to a special dinner with its executives.
Chanka had won the Divali Nagar Queen competition in 2015. Mangaroo said Chanka was the second Hindu woman to have ever won the local Miss World title, the first being Rohini Samaroo in 1981. He also urged the business community to throw their support behind Chanka since sponsorship may be hard to come by.
NCIC president Deokienanan Sharma heaped praises on Chanka and announced that he has plans to change the annual Divali Nagar Queen Pageant to an annual Miss Indian Diaspora Pageant. Franchise-holder Vanessa Sahatoo-Madoo said she has not yet received any positive word of sponsorship from the government. Sahatoo-Madoo said it may cost around $200,000 for Chanka to attend the finals of the Miss World Pageant in China carded for December.
