Che puts best foot forward – literally

Her determination to cross the stage at the recently held Miss Universe Barbados pageant while on crutches made this clear.
The 24-year-old is confidence personified but unlike some of the other nine beauty queens in the Crown Events-staged event, she had no formal training in such a setting – just a will to succeed.
Recently at Café Luna, Enterprise Christ Church, she briefly recalled wanting to get her feet wet in that area by taking part in her alma mater Harrison College’s model search.
But her hectic schedule would not allow it. Amidst travelling, she was on the student council, a member of their debating society, and eventually served as deputy head girl.
But after watching former Miss Universe Barbados and schoolmate Shannon Harris take the title last year, her interest in the world of pomp and pageantry was reignited.
“I was always waiting for the right opportunity and I felt like this year it came up at just the right time.I was thinking about it, but I had never told anybody else, but one day a friend called me and told me ‘I think you should try Miss Universe’ and I said ‘I already made that decision but thank you for confirming it for me. I felt like that was what I needed to make that next step,” Che recalled.
For obvious reasons she stood out when she competed on the final night, and by the judges’ estimation, her prejudging work was enough to land her in the top five.
Leading up the big night, the budding recording artiste said she did a lot of introspection and training on her walk. She wanted to make sure her final answer was of substance. All was going well up until Sunday September 3 – the day of the car accident.
She vividly remembers that day. Her sister was in the driver’s seat travelling along Ebenezer, St Philip, when they began having car troubles. They were on their way to record video footage for the show.
She said the vehicle’s steering became unresponsive and she watched on the edge of her seat as her sister struggled to stop it from swerving into the next lane and crashing into oncoming traffic.
Luckily, they missed the three vehicles on the side but ended up smashing into an electricity pole. The impact fractured Che’s right foot while leaving her sister with minor injuries after the airbag expanded.
“It was something that I would never want to go through again,” she said.
During the rough ride, she said she knew they would have survived. But the moment she exited the vehicle she realised she was not physically okay.
“I was getting out on her side and I just started to walk as normal but then I realised immediately that I could not walk. The pain was so instant and so real,” she recalled.
Because she was wearing a branded Miss Universe Barbados T-shirt, she attracted the attention of the emergency officials.
After getting her foot tended to, Che had to make a decision – stay or drop out of the pageant.
“Everybody thought I was crazy; the doctors didn’t exactly advise me against it they just told me not to put weight on my foot so I thought ‘perfect’. I am not going to have to put any weight on my foot to cross the stage. I didn’t know how I was going to get it done, to be honest, but I was determined to get it done some way,” she said.
Fortunately, the organisers were able to make accommodations for her – which she thanked them for – and for the lessons she learned along the way.
“Looking back at the competition I realised how I strong I am. No one could have ever predicted a broken foot from a car accident. My greatest test was endurance and just hanging in there and pushing through the frustration and the sadness.
“I did have some pretty down days but I am so proud of myself that I was able to continue and finish what I started,” she added.
Before she made strides in the pageant world, she was busy becoming a credit officer. Her master’s is one of her next goals.
She also loves singing, baking and dancing – a hobby she desperately wants to get back into.
“I can’t wait to be off of my crutches so that I can get back into it. I stopped for a while because I wasn’t able to find a club, but I found one now so I am excited to give it a try when I get back on my feet,” she said.
When asked if she planned to compete next year, she simply said much can happen in a year, so we will just have to wait and see. (TG)
