A SCOTTISH air hostess is looking forward to travelling the world – as beauty pageant champion of Europe.

Melissa Douglas, 20, lifted the crown of Miss European at a glitzy bash in Malta earlier this week.

And now she can’t wait to represent her country as she travels across the continent in her new role as beauty queen.

She said: “It’s been amazing, a little strange but in a good way.

“I’ve been taking part in these competitions since I was 13 so it’s really fantastic to have won such a big prize.

“I’m still a little stunned actually but I can’t wait to go travelling now in my new role as Miss European.

“My family were able to come out to Malta and share the moment with me – it’s been really great.”

Melissa, from Fife, is one of three Scots who travelled to Malta for the competition

Melissa, from Windygates, Fife, was one of three Scots who flew out earlier this month to take part in the competition.

Facing other beauties from across the continent, the stewardess, who flies with Jet2, came out on top.

And Scotland has a track record in the competition, with ex-Miss great Britain lifting the title in 2012.

Melissa now wants to turn her win into a modelling career and she’s dedicated to putting in the hard work.

She said: “I work for Jet2 and I really love my job – it’s hard work and you get to meet some great people.

“It’s been really busy over the past few weeks but I’m looking forward to the future.

“We had a great time out in Malta, the weather was fantastic and the competition is great.

“We took part scavenger hunts, pyjama parties, fashion shows and discos – so it’s been a lot of hard work.

“I’m hoping to do more modelling, that’s definitely going to be my challenge for the next year.”

Scotland sent three beauties to the competition, with Melissa joined by Dawn Boyle and Amie Nicol.

Team manager Louise Love says that it’s been fantastic for the nation to produce another winner.

And she says that there’s a lot to look forward to for anybody wanting to take part.

Louise said: “It’s absolutely fantastic that Scotland has a winner at this competition.

“Melissa is joining fantastic company by becoming Miss European and it’s lovely for her to have won.

“It’s the third year that she’s competed at the competition so we’re all delighted for her.”

As Louise explains, the competition is gaining more and more popularity – ten years after it started.

And with an emphasis not just on looks but also the personalities of competitors, bosses have high hopes for the future.

Louise said: “We’ve been going for ten years and it’s really gone from strength to strength.

“The ethos of the Miss European competition is Beauty on the inside and the girls really get a chance to shine for the judges and show off their personalities too.

“We head out to the competition for a week and they can really show off what they’re like in all the great activities.

“It’s really fun too – the girls always have a fabulous time.”
