Long, who qualified for the national competition by winning Miss Nebraska’s Outstanding Teen crown in April, checked into the Rosen Centre Hotel in Orlando on Friday and participated in pageant festivities and also went through rehearsals Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

Preliminary rounds began Tuesday evening, and according to Carsyn’s mom, Courtney Long, the Gering teen performed well in the fitness part of the competition that night. Courtney said Carsyn also had a good showing Wednesday night during the talent competition.

“She was so great in talent. She poured her heart into her song," Courtney said. “Her costume was stunning on stage."

Another part of the competition includes contestants doing a formal interview in front of the judges. Courtney said Carsyn was pleased with how her interview went.

“She thinks her interview went well, and she was happy to share her message about her platform and blessing bag project with the judges. She even got to brag about Nebraska's unique food, Runza," Courtney said. Carsyn's platform is FOSTR: Families Overcoming Stigma and Teaching Reliability.

Carsyn is scheduled to go through more rehearsals today before taking part in the evening gown/onstage question part of the preliminary competition tonight.

“She is so excited to debut her dress made by Ashley Lauren,” Courtney said. “She is really excited for tonight.”

On Friday, Courtney said Carsyn will participate in another fun pageant activity, a danceathon with the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen contestants and their big sisters, the Miss America contestants, to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network.

“She’s looking forward to a fun night before the finals [on Saturday],” Courtney said.

Following prelims, judges will narrow the field down to the top 10 contestants, and that list will be announced early on Saturday. Those 10 girls will then compete in all three aspects of the finals competition – talent, evening gown/onstage question, and fitness – on Saturday evening. The winner will be chosen based on those 10 contestants’ performances that night. In addition, one girl will receive the America’s Choice award and will get to compete with the other finalists Saturday night. People have been voting online for their America’s Choice pick for the last few weeks. Each vote is $1. Voting ends today.

Courtney said her daughter remains hopeful that she’ll be part of Saturday’s finals.

“It’s still early in the pageant, but we are seeing great things from our girl,” Courtney said.

Courtney said Carsyn appreciates all the support she’s been receiving from people in the Gering/Scottsbluff area and even across Nebraska.

“She is feeding off of everyone’s support, and she is so proud and honored to be the girl they are supporting,” Courtney said. “She’s very touched that everyone is cheering her on like they are. She is striving to make Nebraska proud, and she is definitely doing that."
