A singer-songwriter and fashion blogger from Balrothery is taking her first steps down a catwalk on Thursday night at the Mansion House in Dublin as a finalist in Miss Universe Ireland.

Hannah Hawkshaw has appeared on the pages of the Fingal Independent a number of times before for her popular fashion blog and her recording as a singer-songwriter but modelling is new for the 20-year-old Balbriggan woman who will be making her catwalk debut in the most high profile way possible as a finalist in Miss Universe Ireland.

So what possessed Hannah to get involved in the competition in the first place? She told the Fingal Independent: 'I would have never considered applying before but when the opportunity came up, I just said why not? You only live once and you have to go for things, in my opinion.'

Hannah was selected as one of 30 finalists for the competition and is now preparing for the big night which will follow the traditional format of an interview round, evening dress and swimwear modelling.
'I'm definitely jumping out of my comfort zone - but you have to challenge yourself and you grow when you challenger yourself,' the young Balrothery woman said.

Hannah said there are a lot of 'misconceptions' about the pageant and she sees it as something that as 'empowers' young women and gives them a platform to highlight issues that are important to them and develop their careers.
The issue that Hannah wants to highlight through her participation in the event, is that of youth mental health. In her early teens, Hannah was diagnosed with ME which meant she had chronic fatigue. The physical illness led to her own brush with mental health issues from depression to anxiety that she says she has only managed to conquer in recent years.

'It completely took over my life for my teen years,' she said.
Hannah hopes to use that personal experience to help other young people suffering from mental health issues for a variety of reasons. She explained: 'I would love to use this opportunity to highlight topics like mental health. I think it is a really important issue for young people. Young people nowadays are under all kinds of pressure with social media and constantly comparing ourselves with what we see on Instagram.'

Hannah has huge support in Balrothery and across Fingal as she steps into the spotlight on Thursday night at the Mansion House and her participation in the competition is being generously sponsored by Pavilions Shopping Centre in Swords and Pegasus Creative.
Once the Miss Universe Ireland finals are over, Hannah is hoping to return to her first love of music. 'I am a singer-songwriter and that is my passion. We are going into the studio in September to start working on some new material and it is a more mature sound than my last single,' Hannah said.

Fingers will be crossed in Balrothery for the local woman as she competes on Thursday night - good luck, Hannah.
