Indians were over their interest in beauty pageants for years. The last two big wins for India was in 2000, when Priyanka Chopra won Miss World and Lara Dutta won the Miss Universe crown the same year. It has been 17 years since, and we’d started believing that beauty pageants are obsolete... when, bam! Out of nowhere (almost) Manushi Chhillar won the Miss World crown, and our entire country hasn’t been able to stop talking about her since then. Manushi is the golden girl of the hour, and everyone is obsessed over every detail of her life. Not just that, everyone is curious to know if and when she will make her Bollywood debut, and what the industry insiders think of her.
During a recent event, the paparazzi got hold of Kangana Ranaut and asked her what she thought of Chhillar’s achievements. Kangana only had the most uplifting words for the 20-year-old. “I am really proud of Manushi Chhillar’s achievements. She definitely is quintessential Miss World; she is a science student, highly educated. She is very very smart and she comes from a small town, specially Haryana which is infamous for harassment and crime against women and she has made us so proud that we have no words to express our gratitude for such a bright young woman, that we have in our country.”
Manushi was born in Rohtak in Haryana to Dr. Mitra Basu Chhillar, who is a scientist at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and Dr. Neelam Chhillar, an associate professor and department head of neurochemistry at the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences.
Before heading for the pageant, Manushi was pursuing a medical degree at the Bhagat Phool Singh Medical College in Sonipat. But, that’s not all. She is also a trained Kuchipudi dancer, who has trained under dancers Raja and Radha Reddy, and Kaushalya Reddy. She has also attended the National School of Drama. But, there’s more to her than this. Manushi also wants to open a chain of non-profit hospitals based in rural areas by leveraging the position of privilege she is in now.
