From body positivity, to breaking rape culture, beauty pageants have never been as revelant as they are today. With stage and crown being used as tools to voice out fresh opinions and raise awareness, it's sad when people still refuse to see how pageants can be a platform of change.
During an interview with GMA News Online at their send-off party on Monday in Quezon City, Philippines, Miss Intercontinental bet Katarina Rodriguez justified how beauty pageants can be a powerful event to influence people.
"I'd have to say the reigning queens before me have done a very good job, Pia Wurtzbach, Kylie Verzosa, are a really good example, even Rachel joining SaveSexy, because I have been with SaveSexy prior to being a Binibini since 2013, she's learning a lot and she's inspired not as a beauty queen but as a person," she told GMA News Online.
She strongly believes that she doesn't have to convince anyone to change their opinion about beauty pageants, since her purpose in joining the competition is not based on other people's sentiments.
"I don't think I need to convince anyone anything, I do think that it is a platform [for] change and it has been for me personally. I'm not really concerned convincing anyone anything, only because I didn't join for other people. I joined for what I felt I should do with my life, with my direction and I have made a lot of changes."
Rodriguez also said her voice has been more impactful when she became a beauty queen compared to when she was a model.
"I have followers from before pa, who are not so familiar with the pageant world but now people are listening, kasi kung model ka lang parang 'yong boses mo hindi masyadong impactful. But as a beauty queen your job is more of a spokesperson," Rodriguez said.
The beauty queen was an Asia's Next Top Model Cycle 2 finalist before she joined Binibining Pilipinas in 2017.
Rodriguez will be flying to Sri Lanka on December 6 for the Miss Intercontinental pageant on which will be held on December 21. — LA, GMA News
