SIOUX FALLS, S.D.- It only took Miranda Mack one try to win the crown of Miss South Dakota in the Miss America pageant circuit.
Winning the Miss South Dakota crown is something Mack says she never expected. Three months before Mack won the state title, she was crowned Miss SDSU, a title she also never thought she’d win.
“I thought, you know I’m gonna go and I’m not gonna win and it’s gonna be really great for my character!” says Mack.
She is the daughter of Hugh and Cari Mack and is a student at South Dakota State University, majoring in music education. Mack called herself “a total SDSU nerd” and was so excited to represent her school at the Miss South Dakota pageant.
Mack says when she heard her name announced as the winner of Miss South Dakota, she couldn’t believe it.
“I didn’t expect that at all and I was in complete shock. I think I was making really weird faces and I was kind of looking at everyone like, what just happened? So it must have been really comical to see,” says Mack.
Mack was also awarded the “Ray Peterson Rookie of the Year” $500 scholarship for the first-year contestant with the highest overall score.
With her platform, “Music for Life,” Mack will be using her title as Miss South Dakota to get people of all ages involved with music. She believes music is a great way to spread joy and be a more well-rounded person.
Mack will represent South Dakota at the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in September 2017. The Miss America Pageant will air on ABC on Sunday, September 10.
