Miss America Savvy Shields visited Cleveland County last weekend, meeting locals and throwing a first pitch at an American Legion World Series game.

She participated in a meet-and-greet at Cleveland Community College on Aug. 13, hosted by the Miss Shelby Organization. State and local pageant titleholders also attended including Miss North Carolina Victoria Huggins.

On Sept. 10, Shields will crown the next Miss America in Atlantic City, N.J. The competition airs live at 9 p.m. on ABC. A native of Fayetteville, Ark., Shields is a student at the University of Arkansas and serves as the national goodwill ambassador for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

She toured the Don Gibson Theatre on Aug. 12 and added her signature to the celebrity wall backstage. Here’s what she has to say about life as Miss America and visiting Cleveland County:

Recalling the moment she was crowned Miss America

“There was nothing going through my mind. I’m pretty sure I blacked out in that moment. You remember it in the pictures people show you afterward. That’s how you remember it by.”

Her thoughts on visiting Shelby

“I have felt overwhelmed with love from the moment we flew in. It’s been nonstop craziness and it’s going to be hard to leave. I’ve been getting to see everything. Usually I don’t get to explore a town this much. It reminds me a lot of Fayetteville. Going to the square and seeing the all the local stores reminds me of my hometown.”

She’s visited 45 or 46 states since winning the crown

“At every place, there’s always been a moment or a person or a conversation or a location that has found its way into my heart.”

Special memories of serving as Miss America

“All the moments with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals for sure. Those are the moments that have changed me for sure, are those kids. I’ve been to a lot (of hospitals). I know its somewhere in the 20s. It’s been amazing. Every kid is different. They’re hands down the most loving and courageous human beings, not just kids, but humans that I know.”

The nicest thing someone said to her

“There was this one time, a parent of one of the Children’s Miracle Network kids. He was a dad and the dad told me, he said ‘Now I know you have the crown on your head, but you realize that the crown was in your heart before it was on your head.’ He did not need to say that, nor do I think he had any experience in pageants, but it meant a lot.”

She will soon crown Miss America 2018

“It’s bittersweet absolutely but it’s an exciting time and nostalgic. It’s going to feel really weird but there’s a reason it’s only a year.”

Advice for the next Miss America

“Don’t drink coffee too fast. I think it loses its effect on you very early on.”
