Following another hurried process and minus hype, organizers of embattled pageant Miss Botswana have announced the final 30 who will contend for the coveted prize at a date yet to be announced.

Auditions for the pageant started in Maun on August 5, continuing to Francistown and ultimately Gaborone last weekend. Thata Kenosi won Miss Botswana 2016/17 last year amidst controversy. Botswana pageantry runs parallel with the history of the country. Even though there had been beauty contests conducted in various villages around the country in the early 1960s, the first Miss Botswana beauty contest was in 1967, conducted as part of Botswana independence celebrations. Botswana made its debut at Miss World in 1972. Traditionally, the winner of Miss Botswana represents the country at Miss World.

Since its beginning in 1951, the Miss World pageant has registered more than 3,500 national winners and currently receives approximately 1 million entries per year across the world. It is the most coveted title in global beauty pageants. The Miss Botswana pageant whose mandate is to develop young women and advance their potential in becoming socially responsible and compassionate through education, life skills and values which will ensure their success in life, clearly stated in their Facebook page that they are in search of a Queen who possess beauty and purpose, a young woman who knows how to carry herself, an all-rounder and has the potential to be the next Miss World.

The scout for the potential queen seemed to have experienced a glitch when it begun. The Maun audition was initially set for an earlier date before being postponed to 5 August. The organizers revealed that the dates were moved as they had wanted to get as many women as they can to come to audition.
