This coming Sunday, scheduled to begin at 9:00 p.m. at “A Social Affair Grounds”, the location of the old bowling alley on East Sunrise, five young ladies will vie for the revered title of Miss Grand Bahama.

Glen Davis, President, Miss Grand Bahama Organization, emphasized the confidence builder significance of the event.

“This will be the Miss Grand Bahama’s 31st annual event that has, over the past three decades given young ladies throughout the community of Grand Bahama a positive outlet, to not only enhance and showcase their outer beauty, but, more importantly exude their inner beauty, confidence and self worth.

The local pageant has transformed over the years, with various segments of the competition taking place prior to the actual event but according to Davis, this year, the pageant will revert to the organization’s original form, where most of the various dimensions to the popular affair will actually take place on the same night of the crowning of the new beauty queen.

“This year, we intend to do it a little differently in terms of the concept of the pageant. Years ago, we did everything during the actual pageants, such as the evening gown, the swimsuit, the costumes on the actual night of the show. Of late, though, various segments of the pageant such as the evening gown competition were held prior to the night of the crowning. However, this year, everything will be held on the night of the event, with the exception of one crucial component of the beauty pageant.

“We intend to go back to the old way of doing pageantry, which is much easier. So, the public can see how the girls are being judged in their evening gown and their swimsuits. The only thing that we have done privately is the judges’ interviews. Our organization really wants to go back to the way in which we did it in the past. It is much easier and it gives the girls more time for themselves.

Davis informed that five young ladies, beautiful both inside and out, will be competing on Sunday for the esteemed crown.

“The five ladies are very strong and I believe that they are ready for Miss Bahamas Universe, or even to travel to Columbia, anywhere internationally, to compete in other pageants. I would rather have five quality participants than having 15 young ladies who are not completely ready for the competition,” he said.

The one selected to be Miss Grand Bahama, will then become eligible to represent the island on both national and international platforms. Each contestant is required to submit a biography (bio) and a platform. Miss Grand Bahama is expected to move about throughout the GB communities, showcasing the title and the brand to motivate other young persons. The Miss Grand Bahama platform will be utilized to interact often throughout the island at a variety of events.

Davis, a veteran in dealing with pageants, pointed out as further stated that a contestant’s demeanor and overall pleasant personality is what will ultimately be the determining factors.

“I started in the pageantry arena in the late 1970s. I am originally from Harbour Island where I started the local pageant there, Little Miss Harbour Island. I then relocated to Nassau where I was influential in other pageants as well. I moved to Grand Bahama in 1992 and started the Miss Talented Teen Northern Bahamas, along with others. We then received the franchise of Miss Grand Bahama from Joan Neely, who had the franchise for quite some time.

“We expect a lot from our contestants. A good attitude is very important. I can detect a poor attitude in contestants when I see them. I have been in the business for very long, so it is very easy for me to zoom in on that. I always look for a good attitude, a good personality.

“Anyone can have beauty on the outside, but if there is no beauty on the inside, then there is no sense in competing in Miss Grand Bahama or any other pageant. A good personality and a good attitude are aspects most important in these young ladies today,” said Davis. He appealed for the public to give support to the contestants.

The young ladies competing this year and the beaches they will be representing are as follows: Raquel Munnings, Coral Beach; Alesia Edgecombe, Xanadu Beach; Esther Cooper, Taino Beach; Savannah Sawyer, Barbary Beach; and Evena Gibson, Lover’s Beach.

Organization members of the Miss Grand Bahama Pageant include: Glenn Davis, president; James Bridgewater, co-director; Grace Farquharson, contestants’ supervisor; April Crowther- Gow, official host; and Pleasant Bridgewater, legal advisor and co-host.
