Sheilla Yama. September 27, 2017

Miss Pacific Islands Pageant Papua New Guinea (MPIP PNG) announced yesterday that the third entrant in this year’s pageant is Miss International Training Institute (ITI), Sheilla Yama.

Ms Yama, of Western Highlands, Morobe and Northern heritage, graduated from Pacific Adventist University in 2014 with a Bachelor of Nursing degree and currently works as a nurse at Port Moresby General Hospital’s surgical department.

She said working shifts at the hospital allows her to be able to model at events, as long as she plans ahead of schedule.

Ms Yama thanked MPIP PNG for giving young women like herself and others the opportunity to come together and be part of a great initiative to develop their confidence, network and be role models to other women and girls.

She also thanked the ITI management for sponsoring her participation in the pageant.

“I believe education is something that we all need to change our country,” she said.

“When you educate (a) woman, you educate a family. And when you educate a family, you educate the whole nation.”

ITI managing director, Kumaran Sentheyval, said last year, they had taken on the challenge to participate in the pageant at the last minute and will continue to support the pageant this year and in future.

“We are happy to support this (pageant) because it actually brings out what PNG can offer as well,” Mr Sentheyval said.

“The ultimate is going to the Pacific as well, so it actually gives PNG recognition as well. Here, we have a lot of talent…PNG fashion is now only beginning to make the way out to the rest of the world, and a lot of people like that. So it’s good, and this is one of the ways to promote that as well.”

MPIP PNG chairperson, Molly O’Rourke, said Wantok Clothing designer Genevieve Igara-Falevai will be Ms Yama’s stylist.

“We will be announcing more contestants in the coming weeks, because we’re hoping this year to have have at least seven or eight contestants,” Mrs O’Rourke said.
