Miss Kansas 2017 Krystian Fish has finished her preparation and is headed to Atlantic City for the Miss America Pageant.

The road to Miss America began for Miss Kansas 2017 Krystian Fish almost the moment she won her title in Pratt back in June. She has been busy ever since, preparing for the pageant and traveling across the state and country, meeting citizens and politicians as she spreads her message of helping people with disabilities not let the disability define who they are, said fish whose ultimate goal is to make a career serving the needs of the disabled and the Miss Kansas Pageant is a key to accomplishing her goal.

“This is one of the best things a woman can do to jump start a career,” Fish said.

But most of her time has been spent preparing for the Miss America Competition. Fish will be leaving Aug. 29 for the Miss America Pageant that will be held in Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J. She will have two weeks of rehearsals and preliminary competitions before the finals on Sept. 10 on ABC.

Her competition week schedule is: Tuesday, Sept. 5-Interview, Wednesday, Sept. 6-Talent, Thursday, Sept. 7-On-Stage Question, Friday, Sept. 8-Eveningwear and Lifestyle and Fitness in swimsuit.

Before the competition starts, one contestant will be guaranteed a spot in the top 15. From now until Sept. 5, voting is open for “America’s Choice,” a contestant that will automatically be placed in the top 15 on the final night of competition. To vote for Miss Kansas, go to MissAmerica.org/vote and click on Kansas. Everyone is allowed to vote just once a day and voting is open until Sept. 5, Fish said.

Fish knows Miss America will be a difficult challenge. The contestants are the best of the best and Miss America is a whole other level of competition.

Fish started journalizing her journey as Miss Kansas. Her faith is important to her and she incorporates it in her journal. Through her journal, she reveals how she has grown, how she feels and it gives her a place to help get things off her chest. She writes it down and stress is gone.

Fish has been working hard on her talent for Miss America. She has been singing an hour and a half every day and has decided to keep the title of her song a secret. Not even her family knows what she is going to sing. People will just have to tune in and hear for themselves, Fish said.

She has also been working out a lot. She doesn’t diet but eats good, healthy meals with a lot of chicken and broccoli.

“I don’t think you should say no, I think you should say yes to good things. I haven’t stopped eating yet,” Fish said.

She practices walking an hour and a half every day so she will look strong on stage. It’s not easy to walk in heels as much as she has to so walking time is important.

She has been reading up on everything she can get her hands on for her interview and on-stage question.

Weeks have also been spent getting her wardrobe together, deciding on hair style and figuring out what all she needs to take for her two weeks at the pageant.

Besides everything the contestants need for the pageant weeks, each contestant takes along extra clothes because one of them will become Miss America and will have to start her new job immediately. She will not get to go home after the pageant is over so extra clothing is necessary.

While preparation has taken most of her time, Fish has done some traveling and promoting her platform on disability, “Remove the Label: Be Unstoppable.”

She wants to empower the disabled so they don’t let the disability define who they are.

“Lets even the playing field. We should see each other as human beings first,” Fish said.

She feels her platform gives her an edge among the other Miss America contestants because she is the only contestant with a disability platform, Fish said.

She has traveled across the state and even made it to Washington D.C. where she was able to visit with Senators and Congressmen about her platform. She met with Arc of the United States, an organization that advocates for the rights and full participation of all children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

One very special moment came when she got to sit in Eunice Kennedy Shriver’s chair in the Special Olympics Headquarters in D.C. Shriver helped nationalize the Special Olympics. It made a special connection with her and helped her resolve her goal.

“I want to be my own kind of Eunice Shriver,” Fish said.

Eunice (Kennedy) Shriver was a sister to President John Kennedy and Senators Robert and Edward Kennedy.

As the time draws near to head to the Miss America Pageant, Fish has done her preparation work and is confident.

“I’m really calm. I’ve done all I can do,” Fish said. “God has a plan for me. I feel like I should be nervous but I’m not.”

Fish said the current Miss America Savvy Shields summed up the pageant in pretty good fashion. She said, “Either it won’t be you and there’s nothing you can do about it or it will be you and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

Miss Kansas has to travel a lot of mile during her reign and Fish is no exception. In one week she went from Nashville, Tenn. to Kansas City to Oklahoma City to Pratt to Rosehill and finally ended up in Wichita.

Fish competed in the 2017 Miss Kansas Pageant as Miss Heart of the Midwest. It was her third time competing in the pageant. She also competed in 2014 and 2016. The first time she competed she didn’t place and she won no awards but it lit a fire under her that she was going to be in the top five.
