Miss Maryland 2017 Kathleen Masek and Miss Maryland’s Outstanding Teen 2017 Chloe Wildman will both participate in the 50th annual Autumn Glory Grand Feature Parade slated for Oct. 14, beginning at 1 p.m. in downtown Oakland.

Both were crowned this past June at the Miss Maryland Pageant, held at the Historic Maryland Theatre in Hagerstown. Their Autumn Glory appearances are sponsored by Gregg’s Pharmacy and Wildwood Athletic Club.

Masek, 22, is from Westminster and is a business management major. Her platform is the support of military families and her talent was contemporary dance.

“It has taught me the importance of time management,” said Masek when asked what she learned from the pageant program. “It’s a must when going to school, working, supporting yourself and focusing on your platform, talent and physical fitness.”

As a military child, it has always been important for Masek to provide moral and emotional support to military families while also raising awareness for their needs. After moving eight times throughout her childhood, she understands the difficulties of re-establishing oneself in a new school and community. She has organized drives to collect and distribute new school supplies for military children, as well as developed Operation Integrate, a peer-facilitation program for educators and students to help them adjust to their new environments.

Wildman is from Lonaconing and is a senior at Mtn. Ridge High School. Her platform is mental health awareness and her talent was original vocal. After she was awarded her title in June at the Miss Maryland’s Outstanding Teen Pageant, she went on to compete at the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant in Orlando, Florida. At the national pageant, she was named second runner-up and was awarded the Outstanding Achievement in Academic Life scholarship, earning over $8,000 in scholarships.

“I want to bring new focus, awareness and understanding to those who struggle with mental health disorders,” said Wildman. “Not just autism, down syndrome, etc., but to those disorders that are often overlooked because they are silent, such as depression and anxiety.”

As Maryland’s Outstanding Teen, she will spend the remainder of her year of service promoting her personal platform of mental health awareness and representing the Miss Maryland Organization at events throughout the state. It is her goal to establish new programs at the middle and/or high school levels to help students better understand how to help their friends cope and overcome these issues.

The 50th annual Autumn Glory Festival will be held Oct. 11-15 in Oakland, and features two parades, Fall Foliage Driving Tours, the Oktoberfest celebration, the Maryland State Banjo & Fiddle Championships, the Western Maryland Tournament of Bands, antique and craft shows and more.
