Allison Tietjen of Chester, a Thayer Central High School graduate who earned the title of Miss Nebraska 2017, has arrived in Atlantic City, N.J., for the 2018 Miss America Pageant.

Tietjen, 21, flew out of Eppley Airfield in Omaha Tuesday en route to the pageant, which will play out Sept. 6-10. The final night of competition will be broadcast live on ABC Sept. 10, beginning at 8 p.m.

“Miss America, here I come,” Tietjen said Tuesday before leaving the Omaha airport, according to a news release from the Miss Nebraska Scholarship Program Inc. “I can’t believe it is finally here, but so excited for the two weeks ahead.”

She will spend that time in production and rehearsals for the pageant and will make appearances and be part of service opportunities alongside 51 other contestants from across the country. Family members are expected to join her in Atlantic City next week.

The winner of the Miss America title will receive $50,000 in cash scholarships and will travel the country for the next year as an official ambassador for the Miss America organization and Children’s Miracle Network hospitals.

Tietjen, the daughter of Cary and Amy Tietjen, grew up in Chester and graduated from Thayer Central in 2014. She is taking a year off from her studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to fulfill her obligations as Miss Nebraska — a title she won in June.

She has been competing in pageants since 2013, when she represented Chester in the Milo Queen contest at Carleton Milo Days.

So far, she has won more than $13,050 in cash scholarships, plus thousands of dollars’ worth of gifts, services and wardrobe.

The theme for Tietjen’s reign as Miss Nebraska is “United We Stand: Honoring Our Military.” She has helped raise more than $20,000 for Veterans and Gold Star Family Honor Flights and plans to spend the rest of her year as Miss Nebraska advocating for U.S. service members. The 2018 Miss Nebraska Pageant is June 6-9 in North Platte.

Rachel Daly, executive director of the Miss Nebraska Scholarship Program, said Tietjen is a great asset to the organization.

“Allison is the epitome of a hard worker,” Daly said. “She gives 100 percent to anything she sets her focus on, yet maintains a welcoming and warm demeanor while making strides toward her goals. Her characteristics are what we at the Miss Nebraska Organization look for in a representative. We are excited for her to begin her statewide school visits following the Miss America competition to really see the positive impact she will have on Nebraska’s youth.”

Tietjen is eligible for the America’s Choice vote, in which the public can vote online for a contestant to secure a Top 15 spot in the Miss America competition. To cast a vote, go to missamerica.org/vote.
