When Lizzie Jensen was watching then-Miss North Dakota Cara Mund be crowned Miss America, becoming Miss North Dakota wasn't even on Jensen's mind.

"I was just thinking, 'Oh my gosh, Cara's Miss America!,'" said Jensen.

Jensen had a week to process, as well as decide whether to take up the mantle. To decide, she talked with runners-up in-state, as well as runners-up from past competitions who took their states' titles after their state's winner was the Miss America winner.

Jensen came through Rugby last week as part of a media tour. She is slated to speak at a lyceum at Rugby High School on Thursday, Oct. 12.

In the future Jensen will have the option to compete again for the title of Miss North Dakota in hope of a Miss America title of her own. Jensen said the opportunity "was a sign from God" to work on her speaking skills, for when the time comes again, as well as her platform.

Jensen said her platform is called "I Am More," which focuses on anti-bullying and self-worth. For Jensen, it's a platform that hits close to home.

From 2nd grade until graduating from high school, Jensen was a victim of bullying and it caused her to develop an eating disorder. Jensen said she was bullied for her weight, as well as things beyond her control such as her parents' divorce. She used gymnastics as an outlet to vent her frustrations.

Jensen said there was a time when she "lost" herself, becoming depressed, developing anxiety and, for a brief period of time, dealing with suicidal ideation.

"I always say, 'Once you lose yourself completely, you're able to find who you really are," Jensen said.

Jensen got her start in pageants three years ago, competing at an end-of-the-year sweeps pageant. Two months later, when competing as the state level, was when Jensen said she was "bit" by the pageant bug.

Jensen went on to compete in Rugby, winning the title of Miss Geographic Center.

Recently she won the title of Miss West Fargo and was the first runner-up at the Miss North Dakota pageant.

Jensen is currently taking courses from Minnesota State Community & Technical College to become a surgical assistant. She had previously attended classes at North Dakota State University for two years.
