Miss Wayne County wins Miss Michigan USA title

Miss Wayne County, Elizabeth Johnson, was selected as Miss Michigan USA on Saturday at McMorran Theater in Port Huron.

Miss Grosse Isle Teen USA, Anane Loveday, was selected as Miss Michigan Teen USA.

Port Huron also was a winner, according to Marci Fogal, director of the Blue Water Convention and Visitors Bureau.

"It's wonderful," she said. "It's just a great opportunity to showcase our city to these people from all over Michigan.

"It's great for our restaurants and boutiques downtown. While their daughters are rehearsing, the parents are out shopping in our stores downtown."

Fogal said the pageant has a carry-over effect.

"Our hope is they will come back," she said. "This is the first time they've been here, and maybe they'll come back for a vacation.

"... Today I saw parents walking downtown, and that puts a smile on your face that they are enjoying it."

She said the Discover the Blue campaign placed a two-page ad in the glossy pageant program that goes home with many of the contestants and their families.

"We're telling the story of Port Huron and the Blue Water area," she said.

Tim Crumley, of Sterling Heights, was at the pageant to support his daughter, Taylor, Miss Plum Brook USA.

"She's really enjoying it," he said. "She likes the attention, and she enjoyed meeting some of the other contestants."

He said he was having a good time at the pageant and in Port Huron.

"I really enjoy it," he said. "It's a really nice town."

Linda Webb, of Ypsilanti, was a first-time visitor. She was in Port Huron to support her daughter, Ariunna, who was Miss Ypsilanti Teen USA.

"We are having a great time, and she is having a ball," Webb said. "She has met so many girls, and everyone is so wonderful and friendly.

"I think it will boost her confidence."

She said they were enjoying their stay in the city.

"I like Port Huron," she said. "It's a pretty city. I love the waterfront."

Webb said her daughter is a winner, regardless of the pageant results.

"Just coming here and having the experience, she's already won," she said.
