Crowned Miss South Carolina June 24, Suzi Roberts of Pawleys Island will compete for the Miss America title in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on Sept. 10.

To give her a proper sendoff, the Pawleys Island community will honor Roberts, the area's first Miss South Carolina, during a celebration supper event on Sunday, Aug. 13.

Held at the Caledonia Golf & Fish Club in Pawleys Island from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m., the event is also a birthday celebration for Roberts, who turns 24 on Aug. 18. The event is free and open to the public. Casual dress is suggested.

"Despite the fact she hasn’t been Miss Georgetown County or Miss Pawleys Island, Georgetown County has made her Miss South Carolina," said Mariah Johnson, Roberts' mother. "This is a family-friendly community sendoff. It is going to be a fun time."

Donations will be accepted during the event and will go to the Children's Miracle Network, which is nationally aligned with the Miss America Pageant.

"Miss South Carolina has been the top fundraiser for the Children's Miracle Network Hospital," Johnson said. "Of course, Suzi wants to continue that trend."

She said support T-shirts will be available at the event, and that money also goes to the hospital.

"Up to this point, she has raised almost $30,000 for the Children's Miracle Hospital and about 80 percent of that came from Georgetown County," Johnson said. "Suzi hopes she will be taking a total of $50,000 to go to Miss America. She wants to be the miracle maker."

Roberts grew up in Pawleys Island and left at age 12 to enter private ballet study in Houston, Texas. She attended the University of Texas, transferred to the University of South Carolina, cheered for the Atlanta Falcons and then pursued beauty pageants to eventually compete for the Miss South Carolina title. She is now living back in Pawleys Island and plans to attend law school at USC in the Children's Law Program and pursue a career that goes along with her child advocacy platform.

Her father, Gary Roberts, is a partner with Coldwell Banker Chicora Advantage and broker in charge of the South Strand Commercial District. Her mother is an associate with RE/MAX Southern Shores. Roberts also has an 18-year-old brother, Hampton.

Johnson said local volunteers, musicians and businesses who have donated their time have made the sendoff event possible. Moe's Original Bar B Que will supply much of the food, including pulled-pork barbecue and all the fixings; Rustic Table will provide shrimp and grits; Publix will provide a miracle cake; Incredible Edibles will provide a queen's cake for Roberts' birthday; and there will be live music by The Fourclosures and Lana Guy. Other sponsors for the event are Carolina Charm and Caledonia Golf & Fish Club.

"We are having some of her favorite foods - barbecue, collard greens and shrimp and grits," she said. "It will be a South Carolina girl’s party for sure."

Georgetown County Council will also honor Roberts with a proclamation recognizing her as Miss South Carolina, to be presented at its Aug. 22 meeting.
