PICS: Brains and beauty compete for Miss Ireland 2017

The time has come for one Irish beauty to be crowned the 70th Miss Ireland 2017.

Miss Ireland - in association with Vanity X Make-Up Academy - 2017 is no ordinary year for this beloved competition as Miss Ireland celebrates 70 years as the longest running beauty pageant in the world.

With the heats finally closed, 28 chosen contestants from the length and breadth of Ireland are finalising their grueling preparations in hopes to emerge victorious in the beauty, poise and personality stakes.

The glitz and glamour that has long been associated with this national event will come to a momentous close tonight, Friday 22nd of September, in Dublin’s Crowne Plaza Hotel.

She who reigns supreme will then represent the country at the final of Miss World, which will be held on Saturday November 17th in Sanya, China.

This year’s black-tie finale is already shaping up to be one of the most eagerly anticipated social events of the year.

This sparkling highly choreographed show will be presented by TV3’s Elaine Crowley and Miss Ireland Co-Organiser and Stylist Brendan Marc Scully with entertainment from Irish musical sensation The Runaways and Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalist, Leah Barniville along with performances from RTE’s Dancing with the Stars, fashion showcases and more.

Conceived in 1947, Miss Ireland is the longest running beauty pageant in the world and counts a host of famous faces among its previous title holders.

Michelle Rocca came in as second runner-up at Miss International 1981; Siobhan McClafferty was first runner-up at Miss World 1990; Olivia Traceygot into the Top 10 at Miss Universe 1985; Andrea Roche achieved the same placement at Miss Universe 1998; Rosanna Davison represented Ireland at Miss World 2003 and won the coveted title; and Emma Waldron was placed in the Top 5 at Miss World 2010.

The first Miss World event was created by Eric Morley in 1951 as part of his promotion of the Festival of Britain, which took place on the South Bank of the River Thames.

The winner of Miss Ireland 2017 will receive a lucrative modelling contract and a host of prizes including professional media training, luxury clothing, a professional photo shoot and beauty products.

She will be flown to Sanya, China, for an all-expenses paid month-long trip as she takes part in the Miss World competition.

As well as this, she will return on Saint Patrick’s Day as an official guest and Irish ambassador for China’s celebrations.
