Is there a "winning" zodiac, too?

The stars can guide us down the path of our most far fetch dreams. Zodiacs help us understand a person’s characteristics and what their contributions can be. Some signs are more known for service while others are known for their drive and work ethic. As a person who recently took interest in pageants (and maybe too strong of an interest in zodiacs), I was curious to know the zodiacs of our Miss America winners because many are very inspiring and interesting women.

With that being said, I’ve listed below—from the most wins to the least—of the previous Miss Americas’s zodiac signs along with a description of how that particular sign is likely to have an impact in the pageant community. Is there a "winning" zodiac in pageants? Not necessarily, but some have more commonly won than others.

Disclaimer: I used this site to track the birthdays of each Miss America winner, though about 6-7 I could not find birthdays for. I went through and personally added up the zodiacs of each. However, this does not mean pageant judges select winners based on their zodiacs or that their sign is their reasoning for winning. This was just an interesting study I thought I'd conduct for fun.

1. Sagittarius (November 22nd-December 21st)

Pictured: Miss North Dakota 2016 Cara Mund crowned as Miss America 2017
Sagittarius wins spot #1 as the most frequently winning zodiac among our Miss Americas! I was surprised to see Sagittarius beat out Cancer, but of course it was only by 1. Based on my counting, eleven Miss Americas fall under this sign. Our current Miss America 2017, Cara Mund (born December 8th) is a Sagittarius woman herself.

This is fitting considering Sagittarians have a fire to them that doesn’t burn out. These are some of the most intelligent and strongest women as they are open-minded and expansive. They have stamina and work hard. They not only love taking risks, but they are also justice warriors who will fight for what they want and what they believe in. They aren’t as dynamic as their fellow Fire signs, but Sagittarius has an airy element to them that balances them and makes them less overbearing than their fellow Fire signs. Sagittarius is also fun-natured and have a vibrant personality that is hard not to notice. In addition, it isn’t surprising to see a Sag woman an advocate for women’s empowerment—as they are all about girl power themselves!

2. Cancer (June 21st- July 22nd)

Pictured: Miss Arkansas 2015 Savvy Shields crowned as Miss America 2016
Now, this was the sign I expected to be #1. Take our beloved Savvy Shields (born July 1st), for example. She is the perfect example of what a Cancer woman portrays. Gentle, sweet, kind, charitable, selfless, and caring, Cancers have the characteristics of what most pageant organizations want their titleholders to possess. Ten Miss Americas fall under the Cancer sign. To include former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson who legally battled Ailes over sexual harassment (born June 21st- Miss America 1989).

The person who will literally give a shirt off their back for someone? Who can’t hurt even a fly? Who just wants to see the world be a better place? That’s Cancer for you. Cancers are also very creative and have a flair for the arts—especially visual art or music. Cancers are highly emotional and artistic expression is their ideal outlet. They are helpers and a leader through example. They aren’t ones to fully take charge, but how good of people (most) Cancers are is what inspires many.

3. Pisces – tied with Cancer (February 19th-March 20th)

Pictured: Miss Wisconsin 2011 Laura Kaeppeler crying as she is crowned as Miss America 2012
This was an unexpected sign, but now that I think about it, it makes total sense. Alongside with Cancer, ten Miss Americas are born under Pisces. Miss America 2012 Laura Kaeppeler is a Pisces (born March 2nd)—which makes sense considering she was the first to bring back the title to Wisconsin aside from Terry Meeuwsen in 1973. Pisces, much like Aquarius, are usually the underdogs who make lasting impressions and inspirations when successful. Why is Kaeppeler cry so hard when she won? Probably because she didn't really think she could do it. (Which is common for Pisces to be extremely humbled because they tend to underestimate their talent. It's quite endearing.)

Pisces are the dreamers of the zodiacs. Typically shier and more reserved in nature, Pisces are not seen as the “divas”. Instead, they are known for their endless creativity, imagination, kindness, and hope. They are unusually and exceptionally talented individuals—as we notice how many artists, musicians, and renowned intellectuals are also Pisceans. Their talents are what allow them to thrive in life since they are shier and are not as quick to put themselves out there. However, when they do, they are by far some of the most fascinating individuals you will ever come to see. In addition, they are full of service as they also have large hearts that only want the best for everyone.

4. Leo (July 23rd-August 22nd)

Pictured: Miss Virginia 2012 Caressa Cameron crowned as Miss America 2013
Ahhh, this is where we see the “divas” of the zodiac—but not in a bad way! Nine Miss Americas are born under Leo. Leos are the “queens” of the zodiac. It's no surprise to see the long list of musicians, actors/actresses, and politicians born under Leo—and numerous Miss Americas! Miss America 2010 Caressa Cameron is a Leo woman herself (born August 4th). Gee, she even attended Barbizon Modeling and Acting School. Miss America 1986 Susan Akin (Miss Mississippi- born August 12th) was a political activist following her reign as Miss America.

Leos were born to thrive on stage and in public—as they are known as the “performers” of the zodiac. They are leaders directly and through example. They are vivacious, talented, strong-willed, generous, empowering, and well-spoken. As a Miss America, there is one unique characteristic that likely earned them their title—their burning passion that is hotter than any other zodiac. Most Leos have an overwhelming big heart (something their sign is known for) who enjoy community service and helping others. It's part of a Leo's nature. They are fun-loving, warm, diplomatic, and open-minded. Leos also love risk taking and are extremely driven and hardworking. Need we not mention that their style is bold, unique, and eye-catching! Note why Caressa Cameron managed to win in a yellow dress!

5. Aquarius (January 20th- February 18th)

Pictured: Miss Nebraska 2010 Teresa Scanlan crowned as Miss America 2011
Eight Miss America titleholders are born under Aquarius. I think this is a fairly understandable rank. This is the humanitarian and intellectual sign who wants to change the world. They are commonly the underdogs who are victorious because of their kind hearts, self-confidence, easy going nature, and more importantly—their keen intelligence! However, many Aquarians can be more reserved which easily fools people into thinking they don’t have what it takes—but they do. They defy logic and expectations—usually trying to exceed them.... and they do.

Teresa Scanlan, Miss America 2011, was Saludictorian of her high school, first to bring back the Miss America crown back to Nebraska, and the youngest to be crowned Miss America at age 17. She was an Aquarius (born February 7). Ericka Dunlap was crowned Miss America in 2003 and 2004 as the first African American Miss Florida. She was also an Aquarius! (February 17th).

Honestly, this is definitely something to expect from an Aquarius. Aquarians are intuitive, intelligent, kind, and approachable. Think of Ellen Degeneres and Oprah Winfrey—both are Aquarius, and both have changed the world. I can say the same about Teresa, as well.

6. Virgo (August 23rd-September 22nd)

Pictured: Miss Georgia 2015 Betty Cantrell crowned as Miss America 2016
I expected Virgo to be higher up on the list, but it is still pretty good considering seven Miss Americas are born under this sign. Virgos are strong upholders of individuality and are typically non-conformists. Miss America 2016 Betty Cantrell (born September 1st) was a stick-out that year because of her dreams of being a country singer and her determination to win a pageant to pursue this dream.

Virgos also have overwhelmingly big hearts (just look where they are on the zodiac plane—explaining why Leo and Cancer have this same characteristic). They aren’t self-serving and typically ones who not only commit to community service, but they lead these efforts. They are also leaders who are extremely dedicated and hard workers. Their goal in life is to do good and make others happy. Virgos are known as the “sign of service” for a reason—which is only fitting for a Miss America titleholder.

7. Aries (March 21st-April 19th)

Pictured: Miss Hawaii 1991 Carolyn Sapps crowned as Miss America 1992
Tied with Capricorn, six Miss America titleholders were born under Aries. Aries are the leaders of the zodiac who are fiery, passionate, and empowering. Their personalities are typically fun and dynamic, and this draws many to an Aries woman. Miss America 1992 Carolyn Sapp (born April 5th) is an Aries woman who publicized her battle with domestic violence and was the first Miss Hawaii to win the Miss America title. (As Aries is the "first" of the zodiac, this isn't surprising.)

While Aries may not be a popular titleholder, what makes them stick out is that they continue their legacy after their year of service. Aries, much like its fellow Fire signs, have goals to change the world and share their passions. They are natural born leaders who use their titles to lead others in a positive direction—which is a notable trait that any Miss America should exemplify.

8. Capricorn—tied with Aries (December 22nd-January 19th)

Pictured: Miss New York 2012 Mallory Hagan crowned as Miss America 2013
Six Miss America titleholders are born under Capricorn. The advantage that Capricorn women have is their determination, practicality, organization, and desire to lead in a positive direction. Miss America 2013 Mallory Hagan is born under this sign, and she worked her butt off competing for years and invested her time into it—also being the first woman representing Brooklyn to win the Miss America title.

That is what most Capricorn women have on any other sign—persistence. They aren’t as easily discouraged and can move forward in any situation. They are level headed and have fair judgment of most situations. They understand the value of investment and hard work. I’m surprised that not as many Capricorns win the Miss America title, but it’s probably because Capricorns do have a more serious and less outgoing nature (though this may not be true for every Capricorn—just look at Mallory Hagan!)

9. Taurus (April 20th-May 20th)

Pictured: Miss New York 2013 Nina Davuluri crowned as Miss America 2014
Five Miss America winners were born under Taurus. Taurus is not ideally the “pageant” type due to their down-to-earth and simple nature. However, any Taurus who is more glitzy and glammy is one to watch out for. Taureans are hardworking, dedicated, and strong individuals. They are commonly into music and dance—as their ruling parts are their ears and throat. Essentially, they are performers, but are a little more reserved. Most focus their sights specifically on their passion, such as striving to be a professional dancer or vocalist, but some Tauruses use pageantry to achieve these goals.

Miss America 2014 Nina Davuluri (born April 20th) is a Taurus herself —though she was born on the cusp of Aries.

She was the first Indian-American to win the Miss America title and is still active with her platform and community service as her title has been passed on (which is probably her Aries cusp having its effect). However, Taurus does possess very similar qualities as Aries as they are next to each other in the zodiac spectrum.

10. Scorpio—tied with Taurus (October 23rd-November 21st)

Pictured: Miss California 1982 Debra Maffett crowned as Miss America 1983
Five Miss America winners are born under this sign. This doesn’t necessarily mean Scorpios don’t deserve to be higher on the list. The reason I think Scorpio isn’t a common titleholder because of their home-bodied nature. Many Scorpios are dedicated to their families, friends, and loved ones while focusing on providing for them. They are known for their overwhelming love and will bend at anyone's will to make them happy. Any Scorpio successful in pageantry is likely because they are looking to bring positive change to such a negative world. Meanwhile, a Scorpio who has their mind set on something is a forced to be reckoned with—because their passion is a very close second to Leo.

Miss America 1983 Debra Maffett (born November 9th) is born under Scorpio. She lost in the Miss Texas pageant numerous times only to take the crown as Miss California when she moved there later on. Scorpios are also very persistent and strong, and this mostly works in their favor. On the positive side, Scorpios are very giving individuals who are dedicated to service, nurturing and helping others, and making a difference.

11. Gemini (May 21st-June 20th)

Pictured: Miss Hawaii 2000 Angela Perez Baraquio crowned as Miss America 2001
Four Miss America titleholders are born under this sign. I didn’t expect Gemini or Libra to be as low on the list as they are. Air signs tend to be more aloof and hard to pin down, so that's why I assume they are not as common. People are probably laughing at Gemini’s low ranking like, “Go figure.” However, what makes Gemini a standout otherwise is their wit, intelligence, and superb communication skills. The problem with Gemini is that they have trouble committing and tending to one thing—which is difficult to balance with the demands of pageantry because it requires a lot of commitment. However, when Gemini actually decides to put their mind to something, they are undoubtedly bound for great success because they are very talented, unique, and intelligent individuals.

Miss America 2001 Angela Baraquio is a passionate educator, media personality, and political activist—which is commonly seen with those born under Gemini. She has had great success and is still serving communities and advocating for education. Once Gemini finds something they love—and if that love becomes pageantry—then they serve their Miss America title well.

12. Libra—tied with Gemini (September 23-October 22)

Pictured: Miss Kansas 1996 Tara Holland crowned as Miss America 1997
Libra also has four Miss America titleholders. I personally expected more Libras on the list considering they are very feminine, balanced, level headed, and hardworking individuals. Most Libra women are empowering and strive to remain positive no matter what. However, I truly think this is because Libras have a tendency to be quite lazy or a little too relaxed about things that should have more attention brought to them. On the other hand, I have seen many Libras who are successful in pageantry especially because Libras are inherently cautious about their health and beauty—which is a good thing.

Libras are generally humanitarians as well who hate seeing evil and embrace social justice; therefore, they fight for what is right and usually use pageantry to achieve this. Miss America 1997 Tara Holland (born October 2nd) was a literacy advocate and tutor of people from all backgrounds and believed every child should have opportunities to quality education. When a Libra does thrive in pageantry, it’s usually due to her air sign intellect, realistic expectations for others and themselves, and their authenticity.
