Sophie Anderton

A contestant in this year’s Miss Newark competition has reached the final of the Miss Earth England contest.

Sophie Anderton, 18, of Claypole, who is planning to study chemistry at university, reached the semi-finals of Miss England and was then scouted by organisers of the Miss Earth England pageant who asked her to take part.

Sophie has already been crowned Miss Earth Nottinghamshire 2017 and will compete in the national final, being held at the Burlington Hotel, Birmingham, on Saturday.

The competition will feature contestants from across the UK who will compete for the titles of Teen, Miss and Mrs Earth England, as well as titles for Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

“Miss Earth is well-known for its cause in environmental protection in more than 100 countries and I would be honoured to be given the opportunity to represent my country in a pageant with such strong ethics,” Sophie said.

‘Pageants aren’t just beauty contests’
The contestants have been asked to make an earth warrior outfit and a green goddess board promoting an environmental cause.

There will be a popularity vote, and an award for the best charity fundraiser. Each winner will receive a sash and a crown.

“Pageants aren’t just beauty contests. They are about being a positive role model in today’s society and helping others, as well as being beautiful inside and out,” Sophie said.

The winner will go forward to compete in the Miss Earth 2017 final to be held later this year in the Philippines.
