Even as a child, Manushi Chhillar dreamed of having an impact on the world. And now that she has the platform - she was crowned the 54th Femina Miss India World 2017 recently - she hopes to take full advantage of it to spread awareness about social issues close to her heart. "Growing up," she says, "I was a very philosophical child. I always wanted to leave an impact in the world, have a positive influence over others."

That intrinsic quality made her follow her parents' footsteps and pursue the field of medicine. Unlike her father, Dr Mitra Basu Chhillar, and mother, Dr Neelam Chhillar, though, she had another dream - that of making a name in the field of modelling as well. Chhillar never had to tell her parents about her twin dream though. She says, "They already knew it. They've been very supportive and have treated it like their dream."

She plans to pursue both fields as time goes on. "It's what I'm passionate about. I was always interested in medicine and enjoy modelling. I was always going to be a doctor and a beauty queen. I feel with the title, I can use my knowledge and skill as a doctor on a broader platform."

Chhillar began to use her position of fame during the course of the beauty pageant itself. For her 'Beauty with a Purpose' project for Miss World 2017, she decided to spread awareness about menstrual hygiene through her initiative 'Project Shakti'.

"Apart from menstrual management," says Chhillar, "I would also like to contribute to malnutrition and water scarcity. I spoke to the honourable chief minister of Haryana, Mr (Manohar Lal) Khattar about the project too. I am planning on reaching out to more people and provide them with a system to manage menstruation."

"Coming from Haryana," she adds, "I feel that being someone girls can look up to is a responsibility I have. Definitely, during my meeting with the Haryana CM, we spoke about how I could contribute. Project Shakti is another way I can empower the women of Haryana."

As for her experience at the beauty pageant, Chhillar seems to have had a great one. "Every day was a new experience and I have learned so much. One experience which was special for me was our unveiling shoot in Jaipur. We were wearing Manish Malhotra dresses at the Albert Hall and everyone looked like a dream," she says.

Chhillar represented the state of Haryana at Femina Miss India 2017, and will represent India at the Miss World 2017 pageant which will be held in November this year in China.
