Madison Walker walks onstage Saturday, July 29, 2017, at the Miss Teen USA pageant in Phoenix, Ariz.

Madison Walker,16, who was recently crowned Miss Virginia Teen USA 2017, will compete in the Miss Teen USA pageant next summer in Las Vegas. Walker is a student at Cox High School.

Madison Walker didn’t win the recent Miss Teen USA competition, but left with a new sense of self-confidence.

The 17-year-old from Virginia Beach competed against 50 other girls in the national pageant on July 29 in Phoenix. She competed in the preliminaries but was unable to reach the finals.

“I would definitely say it was really fun ,” Madison said. “I kind of felt like a celebrity the whole time.”

She said she accomplished her main goal of raising awareness for children with disabilities.

“I gained a bigger voice. That’s the best thing I could’ve brought home.”

Madison’s twin brother, Bryan, has Down syndrome. He enjoyed the pageant, she said.

“There’s probably about 1,000 pictures of practices on his iPod,” she said.

Madison is a rising senior at Cox High School who hopes to attend Virginia Tech and major in chemistry.

In the meantime, she’ll continue working with Best Buddies, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit that prepares people with intellectual and developmental disabilities for workforce integration and independent living.
