ON Tuesday, November 14, Binibining Pilipinas-International Maria Angelica “Mariel” Andolong de Leon will attempt to score an unprecedented back-to-back win in Miss International when she competes with 70 other lovely delegates worldwide.

Like Kylie Verzosa, the reigning Miss International who crowned her at the Binibining Pilipinas finals last April, Mariel also vied for the national pageant twice; initially competing in 2013 and finally winning this year.

The daughter of actors Christopher de Leon and Sandy Andolong, Mariel is a classic opera singer who was once with the girl group Opera Belles; she also took up cookery lessons in New Zealand. She has also dabbled into acting and is the leading lady of Coco Martin in the remake of “Ang Panday” which he will produce, direct and star in as entry to the Metro Manila Film Festival in December.

Since winning her Binibining Pilipinas title last April, she has become very vocal about current issues like expressing her disappointment over the appointment of Mocha Uson as assistant secretary for the Presidential Communications Operations Office, her opinions about the reproductive health programs of the government and the war on drugs.

During her sendoff for Miss International last month, Mariel acknowledged the pressure of winning the Miss International crown but vows to pour out all positivity to do her best and enjoy the once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Fellow Binibining Pilipinas titlists Elizabeth Clenci and Nelda Ibe placed 2nd runner-up to Miss Grand International in Vietnam, and 1st runner-up to Miss Globein Albania, respectively.

We have picked Miss Curacao Chanelle de Lau who competed for the 65th Miss Universe Pageant in Manila last January; and Miss Japan Natsuki Tsutsui as Mariel’s most serious competitors. Tsutsui was in Manila last month for a shoot as endorser of Victory Food Market’s Yokocho all-Japanese food court located across the Redemptorist Church in Baclaran, Parañaque; she also graced a Japan travel convention at Conrad Hotel together with Kylie Verzosa.

The 57th Miss International finals will be held at Tokyo Dome City, Tokyo, Japan on Tuesday.
