Young women’s chance to shine in Miss Universe

VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN) - Laos prepares to compete in the Miss Universe contest.

Youthful ladies of Laos will strive to embody the very epitome of felicitous deportment, dimensions and intellect to represent the nation, its people and culture on the international stage as part of the illustrious Miss Universe pageant.

A press conference to publicise Miss Universe Laos Project took place at TVLao studios in the capital yesterday.

National Miss Universe pageants had been organised in more than 190 countries around the globe, and more than a billion people viewed the competition stage each year, Lao People’s Revolutionary Youth Union Secretary and TVLao President Dr Hongkham Souvannavong told media at the press conference yesterday.

He said the first swim suit competition, evening gown round and interviews by judging panels would take place in the Preliminary sections.

The top 15 contestants progressing from this would proceed to the semi finals, being whittled down further to ten and then five in a process of elimination based on their performances in these three categories.

Miss Universe seeks to attract young women to avoid negative influences and develop their capacities and international awareness.

This project will create a good chance for women to show off attributes not limited to their beauty.

They can demonstrate their ability in languages and general knowledge on the international stage of the competition.

This project will attract and promote tourism as well to publicise Laos and other tourism sites, displaying tradition and culture to domestic and international eyes.

The event boosts promotion of handicraft making, outfit designing, jewellery and more.

The pageant will offer a chance for business organisations to publicise their products and services to a wide range of people.

Miss Universe Laos’s project this year is seeking young Lao ladies age 18-28 years old, 168 and taller with a good command of the English language to apply to participate in the project competition.

The application deadline is August 10, and interviews with young ladies who qualify will be announced the following day.

Young women who pass this audition round will join activities of Miss Universe Lao Project on August 14.

Miss Universe was established in 1952 by Pacific Knitting Mills Company headquartered in California USA and was previously part-owned and briefly fully owned by businessman turned US president Donald J. Trump before being sold to WME/IMG talent agency in September 2015.

The Miss Universe title is currently held by Iris Mittenaere of France, crowned on January 30, 2017, in Manila, Philippines.

Dr Hongkham said Miss Universe Organisation licensed the pageant to Miss Universe organisations in worldwide to organise the domestic level competitions and select their countries representative to participate at the regional scale and beyond.

He said Miss Laos Company possessed the sole license in the country issued by Miss Universe Organisation in the USA to organise Miss Universe Laos’s competition.

The company has also organised competition projects in the country such Miss Grand Laos, Miss Laos, Miss World Laos and Miss International.

Success in these has shown the readiness of TVLao and Miss Laos Company to organise the national stage of the renowned international competition.

The final round of this project will take place on August 26 at National Convention Hall.
