Miss USA: 'I fear no question'
since competition
By JEFF KAROUB (AP)

Miss USA Rima Fakih reconnects
with colleagues at a Detroit hospital, Thursday, July 8,
2010, where she worked before winning her title. The 24-year-old
from Dearborn paid a visit Thursday to the Detroit
Medical Center, where she's on leave from her job as a
marketing representative. It's part of her first visit
back to Michigan since being crowned May 16. (AP Photo/Carlos

DETROIT — Rima Fakih said she's learned to fear no
question since competing for — and becoming — Miss USA.
That includes questions asked during the May contest
in Las Vegas in which the 24-year-old Miss Michigan from
the Detroit suburb of Dearborn took the national crown.
But it also includes the media interrogation that began
afterward, when photos emerged of her pole-dancing in
skimpy shorts and a tank top at a Detroit radio show
promotional event in 2007.
"Once you're successful, everyone's going to feed on
that success," Fakih told The Associated Press on
Thursday between events honoring her at Detroit Medical
Center, where she's on leave from her job as a marketing
representative.
"I've learned to be so proud of who I am to the point
where I fear no question," she said. "I have no problem
because I know who I am and I feel like it's for the
world to either accept it and if not, that's fine."
The Lebanese immigrant's first homecoming since the
competition includes an invitation-only gala Friday at
Detroit's Westin Book-Cadillac Hotel. It's a fundraiser
for The Pink Fund, which provides financial aid for
people diagnosed with breast cancer.
The University of Michigan-Dearborn graduate also is
scheduled to receive a key to her hometown Saturday and
give a talk aimed at young people.
She said she's had a lot of local support from people
who knew the pole-dancing photos were merely part of "a
silly morning show" event "for just women." It was meant
to be about exercise, she said, not eroticism.
What she and her supporters didn't understand was why
the station — and a friend who took those pictures —
would send them out "for the world to see."
"I'm not going to deny the pictures — they're really
(at a) bad angle and they're ugly," she said. "However,
they're not what they're trying to make it out to be."
The show's producers said in May they were contacted
by representatives of the Miss Universe contest
requesting more photographs and information. But the
show also noted that the photos were no more provocative
than anything on the Miss USA website.
Reginald Lee, the medical center's senior vice
president of physician recruitment and development and
the man who hired Fakih, said she's handled the
adversity well. He's been impressed by her demeanor in
the national spotlight — acting much as she did in
department meetings.
He was among dozens of colleagues gathered to welcome
Fakih at a private reception where video of her crowning
was projected onto a wall.
Karen Rychlinski, who worked with Fakih at her
previous job recruiting physicians, said Fakih was
hardworking and humble, and deserves her success.
"We didn't even know she was competing for Miss
Michigan until she won," said Rychlinski, director of
physician relations at Children's Hospital of Michigan.
"It's just nice to see someone go after a dream."
Fakih was born in Lebanon and moved to the U.S. as a
baby. She was raised in New York and moved to Michigan
in 2003.
She said she's proud to be seen "as a different kind
of Miss USA."
"I come from an ideal American, melting pot family
that has immigrated to this country — becoming citizens
and being so proud to be part of a country that has so
much opportunity and freedom," she said.
After a world tour that took her to Rwanda and China,
Fakih is focused on her next milestone: competing for
the Miss Universe crown next month in Las Vegas.
Still, if it all hadn't worked out, she imagines
she'd be at the hospital on this day — minus the crown,
sash and co-workers who are a little more adoring than
usual.
"Thursdays are busy days, so I probably won't leave
the hospital until 7 or 8 o'clock at night," she said.
"I was always a hard worker. That's probably why Miss
USA wasn't too difficult for me to do and work so much
because I enjoy it. ... I enjoy being put to the test."

Rima Fakih of Dearborn is back home for the first time since winning
the Miss USA crown May 16.
This afternoon, she
greeted employees, patients and guests at the Detroit Medical
Center, where she was employed as a physician outreach coordinator
before winning the pageant. She said her job gave her the tools to
win Miss USA.
"I was so shy," Fakih,
24, said. The position taught her to speak up, speak in public, be
an active participant in meetings and be organized.
"Now I can sit down with someone like Larry
King and ask him questions," she said.
Fakih said she wants to spread the word to
young women in Michigan to encourage them to get into
pageants. "It can be a red carpet to life and the world,"
she said.
Two of the young girls she met today both
said they want to enter pageants some day after getting a
chance to briefly wear the Miss USA sash.
Lama Fawaz, 8, of Dearborn said meeting Miss
USA was exciting while Erica Alexander, 5, also of Dearborn,
said she had watched the Miss USA pageant with her mom. "It
was fun to see all the pretty ladies," Erica said.
Friday night, Fakih will attend a pink carpet
fundraiser at the Westin Book Cadillac in Detroit. Proceeds
will benefit the Pink Fund, which provides financial
assistance to breast cancer patients.
Fakih will vie for the title of Miss Universe
2010 on Aug. 23 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino is Las

Ann Arbor welcomes Miss Michigan USA pageant
move to U-M's Power Center
By: Brian Vernellis
When Miss Michigan USA pageant officials visited Ann Arbor,
the city’s nightlife, restaurants and shopping combined to
make the perfect pitch for relocating the competition from
Port Huron. Officials from the city and the Convention and
Visitors Bureau on Thursday officially welcomed Miss
Michigan USA representatives, including reigning Miss USA,
Dearborn’s Rima Fakih, to Ann Arbor at the Michigan Union.
The 2011 Miss Michigan USA and Miss Michigan Teen USA
competitions will take place at the Power Center, Sept.
10-11.
Miss
USA, Rima Fakih of Dearborn, visited the Michigan Union.
Brian Vernellis | Ann Arbor.com
Convention and Visitors Bureau officials project an
economic impact of $375,000 to Washtenaw County and Ann
Arbor as an estimated 100 contestants and up to 2,000
supporters and family members visit area hotels and
restaurants.
"Some of the exciting aspects of Ann Arbor were the
number of hotels, the proximity to the airport is great for
us, the Power Center for the Performing Arts and the age
demographic,” said Melissa Pitchford, executive state
director with the Miss Universe Organization.
“There is a large percentage of people that live in
Michigan between the ages of 18 and 26, and that’s our
demographic. That’s who we reach. We knew this would be a
great fit for our product.”
The proximity to Detroit should also make the event more
appealing for Detroit media.
“It will be more convenient and easier for the greater
Detroit area to get to Ann Arbor,” Pitchford said. “With
Michigan winning Miss USA, there’s going to be a wonderful
pull of media into the Ann Arbor area.”
The pageant spent the last 10 years in Port Huron, but
Kristy Poore, convention sales account executive with the
Convention and Visitors Bureau, brokered the deal to woo it
to Ann Arbor.
“They saw that we had a lot to offer as far as our
community,” Poore said. “The nightlife, the restaurants, the
shopping. They’re excited to be here.
“(Pitchford) came in, and we showed her what we had to
offer, and once she saw the facilities we had, it was an
easy choice to make.”
Miss Michigan USA has a yearly contract with the city, so
a return to the Power Center in 2011 isn’t guaranteed.
“We always do our contracts annually, so it’s something
we’ll have to visit annually,” Pitchford said. “We’ll have
to experience the first time and see how it fits.”
Miss Michigan USA 2011 will represent the state at the
Miss USA competition in Las Vegas in the spring of 2011.
Fakih’s crowning as Miss USA came in May, and it’s been a
whirlwind for her since.
She’s circled the globe visiting foreign dignitaries, but
Thursday’s visit was her first official return to Michigan
as Miss USA.
Born in Lebanon, Fakih moved to New York as an infant.
Her family moved to Dearborn in 2003. She earned a
bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of
Michigan-Dearborn.
"My feet touched the ground a few weeks ago,” Fakih said.
“It’s opened up so many doors. I got to host the USA
Pavilion at the World Expo (Shanghai, China). This is not
just what people see it as.”

a nivel nacional.

Miss BVI may be postponed Days after August
Emancipation Festival organisers announced several entertainers on the
lineup for this year’s festivities, they disclosed some sobering news:
The 46-year-old tradition of having a Miss BVI Pageant might be broken.
“There is a possibility that there might not be a Miss BVI in the
traditional form,” Collin Scatliffe, chairman of the Festival and Fairs
Committee, said in an interview yesterday morning.
In previous years, the pageant was among the highlights of the
Festival celebrations. Last year, six contestants competed, and
Josephina Nunez emerged as winner. In the succeeding months, she
represented the territory at pageants and other events here and abroad.
However, only one young woman is signed up for the event this year,
according to Mr. Scatliffe.
Others had expressed interest, but dropped out for various reasons.
For example, one young woman lacked her family’s support, while “two of
the girls thought that the competition was too much, and they felt they
could not compete,” Mr. Scatliffe said.
Other prospective contestants felt that they needed more time to
prepare. Meanwhile, some young women who had shown interest did not meet
eligibility requirements, and one contestant was disqualified, the
chairman explained.
This lack of sufficient participation, he added, has left the
committee with two options: Have a Miss BVI 2010 crowned by default, or
hold the pageant later in the year.
If organisers decide on the first option, the contestant would have
to perform for the public during Festival, Mr. Scatliffe explained.
“She would model swimwear, cultural wear, and perform a talent to
demonstrate her abilities and how she would represent the country as
Miss BVI,” the organiser said.
Other Festival plans are proceeding without hiccups, according to Mr.
Scatliffe. “Everything else is on target. Hopefully, no more surprises.
Everything should be going smoothly,” he said.
Last week, the committee announced headliners for this year’s
concerts. Neil Blyden, of Neil Blyden and Associates, has been
contracted to handle the entertainment, according to a statement
released by the committee.
Some of the headliners include dancehall group T.O.K, reggae legend
Gregory Isaac and dancehall singer Demarco. The BVI Beacon, 08.07.10

An Uphill Climb for Miss Montana

By Erin ColeWhen
Kacie West, the newly crowned Miss Montana 2010 and a former
Kalispell resident, competes in the Miss America competition
in Las Vegas this January, she will find the odds stacked
against her. Excluding powerhouse California, the western
states are not known for churning out champion pageant
queens. It isn’t too much a stretch to say that the closest
Montana has come to the crown was when Joe Montana had his
picture taken with Miss America in 2009.
This isn’t to say that Miss Montana hasn’t had an effect on
the competition. Miss Montana 1949 is responsible for the
banning of animal acts after she and her palomino horse
nearly fell into the orchestra pit during the talent
competition.
Perhaps most hindering Montana’s success rate is the
statewide lack of pageant culture and the industries that
support it.
Most state-level competitions in the Miss America system are
closed whereas Montana’s is open. In the neighboring Miss
Idaho competition, 22 women competed for the crown, only
after advancing from separate local competitions. At June’s
Miss Montana competition, meanwhile, 13 contests competed,
after doing nothing more than meeting the requirements and
completing the paperwork.
“It’s very unusual in the Miss America system not to have
any feeder competitions,” Cheri Kennedy said. “More
experience would really help produce better contestants.”
Kennedy, a pageant coach based out of Minneapolis, Minn.,
has worked with past Miss Montana contestants. While she
would like to see Montana produce contestants who are more
prepared, she realizes the state’s limitations.
“They don’t have the things they need available, so it’s
hard,” she said. “I’ve worked with girls in Wyoming who are
in the same situation.”
The most needed pageant accoutrement is a stable of
professional coaches. These men and women teach contestants
how to glide across the stage in four-inch heels, converse
with judges on world affairs and how to stay well-groomed
and beaming under pressure. In the smoke-and-mirrors world
of pageantry, their involvement is absolutely necessary.
Kennedy also points to the enormous number of pageants
hosted within the states that produce the most winners.
“Georgia has at least two pageants every weekend and these
girls are in them from a young age,” she said. “It’s amazing
how good they are.”
Despite the impediments, Kennedy believes that the right
Montana contestant can advance, if she possesses the drive
and is willing to put in long hours of practice.
“These other girls are preparing like crazy; really in-depth
preparation,” she said. “The most important thing in the
Miss America system is finding a great talent-it has to be
beyond-belief excellent.”
Forty years ago, the stars aligned for Joanna Lester in
Atlantic City. Competing as Miss Montana 1961, Lester is one
of only two Montana women to place in the top 10 at the Miss
America competition. The last Miss Montana to reach the top
10 was Yvonne Dehner in 1994.
Lester, who now lives in Missoula, says her success in the
competition resulted from her stellar performance in the
talent competition.
Coached by her father, who at the time was a professor of
voice at the University of Montana, Lester sang a medley of
four different songs, ranging in genre from opera to pop.
“It was really well received and I got a big hand of
applause,” she said.
Lester says she gained valuable experience singing with the
UM Jubileers and that the school’s small size allowed her
more time in the spotlight during various musical
productions.
“I had so much experience with the university and I was
comfortable being onstage,” she said. “I’m also sure I
looked OK in a bathing suit.”
Yet she was surprised to advance in the competition and
admits her nonchalant attitude might not fly in today’s
pageant world.
“I was kind of naïve in that I didn’t get too excited about
the whole thing,” she said. “I realize now that it was a
bigger thing but then I didn’t have time to be real worried
about it, and there was no actual training like there is now.”
More recent Miss Montanans feel it is the lack of access to
training that hinders them.
“Montana is at a disadvantage,” Miss Montana 2007 Kristen
Mantooth Yeley said. To prepare for the Miss America
competition, Yeley traveled to Minneapolis, Minn. for dress
fittings and trained with an interview coach in Portland,
Ore.
“It would be nice if everything was here, but I guess that
adds to the character of being Miss Montana,” she said.
But according to Yeley, the Miss America pageant is just a
small part of being Miss Montana.
“It's really a service position,” she said. “It's about
traveling across our big state, going to schools and
interacting with so many young people.”
Kerry Burman, interim executive director of the Miss Montana
program, agrees that the most emphasis put on the Miss
Montana position is her community service.
“So many people don’t understand that it’s not a beauty
pageant,” she said. “It’s a scholarship program and the
chance to make an impact on Montana.”
The Miss Montana outfit, based in the eastern city of
Glendive, operates as a non-profit and relies on donations
and sponsorships to keep it afloat. Burman herself is a
volunteer and by day works as a Glendive city judge and an
EMT.
According to Burman, the bulk of the program’s funds go
toward sending Miss Montana on a statewide school tour,
where she discusses her platform with different communities.
But even this has had to be curtailed.
“It would be nice if she could make it to more schools but
we don’t have the funds,” she said. “We’re not able to do
that without additional support.”
But some money must go toward prepping Miss Montana for the
national spotlight. This year, a portion of the budget has
been set aside for fittings at Regalia, an Orlando-based
pageant gown store. West will stop there when traveling to
Florida in August to support Amy Fox, Miss Montana’s
Outstanding Teen, as she competes in the Miss America
Outstanding Teen national competition. West will also visit
pageant coaches in South Carolina and Houston, Tex.
Burman says that while several Glendive businesses have
donated smaller wardrobe items, their stock is limited and
the pageant has fallen off the radar for much of the state.
“I would like to see us be able to provide her with more
money,” she said. “We would love to have not just local, but
statewide support.”
But as West swept all five categories of the Miss Montana
competition and is a trained vocalist comfortable with
tackling big Broadway songs, expectations are high.
“I think she’s ready to go,” Burman said, “and I think
she’ll do really well.”
Meanwhile, West’s competition preparations have moved from
discussing current events with her family at the dinner
table and drilling from a former high school debate coach to
working with the Miss Montana organization and serving as an
ambassador of the Children’s Miracle Network.
West possesses a can-do Montana attitude, which will serve
her well.
“I’m going into this thinking that I’m going to try my best
and my goal would be to be one of the finalists, but if not,
I know that I will put 110 percent into everything that I
do,” she said. “We’ll see what happens.”
Former Miss Montanans like Yeley always have hope.
“You never know, this could be the year,” Yeley said. “We
might see Kacie West crowned as Miss America.” Flathead

Miss
Minnesota will trade crown for Chipotle
By
Monica Wright
Newly
crowned Miss Minnesota Kathryn Knuttila is
everything you want representing our state:
the Detroit Lakes native is a junior at
McNally Smith in piano performance and
classical composition, is a tireless
promoter of the Children's Miracle Network,
and she can easily pack away a Chipotle
burrito bowl and still be hungry for more.
As a pageant contestant, she's no doubt used
to improvising answers in interviews, so we
thought we'd throw a few food-related
questions her way:
1.You hail from
Detroit Lakes. When you're back home, what
are some of your favorite places to dine
out? Who considers you a regular?
Miguels! It is the cutest little Mexican
place that I eat at any chance I can get. I
don't know what it is about their soft shell
tacos but they are so delicious! The family
of a high school classmate of mine owns it
so any time I go there, they know who I am!
It's not really a dine-in sort of place but
it brings me to my happy place.
2. Do you eat
before a pageant (and if so, what), or do
nerves not allow for that to happen?
I don't know why it is, but I am absolutely
starving the entire time of a pageant! The
day of swimsuit competition at Miss
Minnesota, we were given Chipotle burrito
bowls and I ate my entire bowl and was
hungry an hour later! I think it is the
nerves and excitement that makes me want to
just eat!
3. Between being
Miss Twin Cities, attending McNally Smith
College, teaching piano, and all the
appearances that come with your new role as
Miss Minnesota, is cooking something you fit
into your schedule or do you eat on the fly?
If it's the former, what kinds of things do
you like to make for yourself?
I am not much of a cook, but I think it is
because I haven't had the time to be one. I
do eat a lot on the run, so I snack a lot on
almonds, hard boiled eggs, jerky or granola
bars. When I am at home, I can make up a
mean strawberry/chicken/almond salad or
scrambled eggs, and if I am feeling really
ambitious, I make a stir-fry with tons of
vegetables and shrimp or chicken.
4. You mentioned
on your blog that you used to be a waitress.
When/where did you work, and what did you
like most about being part of the restaurant
industry?
I was a waitress at a nice restaurant across
from my family's lake cabin called Spanky's
Stone Hearth. I worked there from the summer
of 2004-2006. I liked being a part of the
restaurant industry because it gave me a
deeper appreciation for how hard everyone in
the industry works! I was treated really
great there, but I have seen some cases
where customers treat the staff rudely. They
sometimes forget that those are real people
just trying to do their job. I've always
said that I think everyone should waiter/waitress
at some point in their life so they can
truly appreciate the job! I also really
enjoyed waitressing because I love the
feeling of serving others, and getting to
meet people from all over Minnesota is
always fascinating to me!
5. If you had to
take one food to the Miss America pageant to
represent Minnesota, what would it be?
Minnesota
wild rice! I love wild rice soup or stuffed
in a chicken breast. Wild rice is
Minnesota's state grain and is almost as old
as history itself! City Pages, 07.08.10
