Beauty pageants have become one of the most important aspects of the world’s entertainment industry since the first international competition was organised in London in 1951.

The main aim of Miss World and every other pageant that followed suit was to uplift the self-image of women showcasing beauty and intelligence for the world to see. It was also a way of helping young girls around the world to feel good about themselves.

Many African countries began to catch on with beauty pageants after their independence.
